Our BMW X5 G05 xDrive45e, first registered on 19 February 2021, now shows 118,000 km. Originally from France, it is currently registered in France and has had two owners, with a change of registered keeper on 23 April 2025.

When BMW launched the G05-generation X5 in 2018, the plug-in chapter opened a year later with the X5 xDrive45e. It replaced the F15 40e and, crucially, swapped the four‑cylinder for BMW’s silk-smooth B58 3.0‑litre straight‑six. Paired with an integrated e‑motor in the ZF 8‑speed and a then‑class‑leading lithium‑ion battery, it delivered a system 394 hp and 600 Nm—and real EV range that finally made a big PHEV make sense day to day.
The timing was spot on. Europe’s tightening CO₂ targets and favourable company‑car taxation made long‑range PHEVs a hot ticket, and the 45e’s WLTP electric reach—often 67–88 km depending on wheels and trim—put it at the top of the heap. Against rivals like the Volvo XC90 T8, Audi Q7 60 TFSI e, Porsche Cayenne E‑Hybrid and Mercedes‑Benz GLE plug‑ins, the BMW’s straight‑six refinement stood out. Reviewers repeatedly praised the seamless power delivery, hushed EV driving up to around 135 km/h, and the way the extra mass was masked by adaptive suspension and xDrive traction. The flip side? A higher kerb weight, a smaller 500‑litre boot due to the raised floor, and an onboard charger limited to 3.7 kW AC with no DC fast‑charge option.
Under the skin, the 45e used BMW’s CLAR architecture and tucked its ~24 kWh gross pack low and central, improving ride composure while keeping the X5’s trademark long‑haul comfort. In many European markets it became a favourite among business drivers because the official CO₂ figure (roughly 27–44 g/km WLTP) and the strong e‑range unlocked generous tax breaks. In the US, its 31‑mile EPA rating, potent six‑cylinder character and a 7,200‑lb towing figure made it a rare PHEV that could both commute in near‑silence and tow like a proper SUV.
Fun fact: at launch it carried one of the largest batteries fitted to any premium PHEV SUV, and for a time it was the de facto recommendation for anyone wanting a luxury SUV that did most urban trips on electrons without giving up long‑distance, six‑cylinder cruising. BMW’s marketing leaned into that duality—quiet school runs, Alpine passes on weekends—and the car popped up frequently in road tests and comparison videos where it often won on powertrain polish and real‑world efficiency.
By 2023 the facelifted X5 LCI arrived and the baton passed to the xDrive50e with more power and a bigger battery. Yet the 45e had already done its job: it proved that a large, comfortable SUV could be a genuinely effective plug‑in, shaped fleet averages in BMW’s favour, and set the template for the brand’s next wave of electrified flagships.
