Our Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, with 98,500 KM on the odometer, was put into circulation on June 1, 1987 in France. Its current owner purchased it in 2022.
This sporty icon comes in a White hue combined with a Black and Red interior in excellent condition for its age. There is a small burn on the right rear seat, a few snags on the rims and a slight scratch at the bottom of the front bumper. The body was completely painted in 2017, giving it an irreproachable shine.
Under the hood, this RS Cosworth hides a 204-horsepower 2.0 Turbo engine combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The exhaust line has been replaced by a group N type, and the air filter and expansion tank have been changed. The clutch and distribution kit were replaced in 2022. Fully monitored by an independent specialist garage, the last revision was carried out in 2022, and a new maintenance will be carried out before the sale. The consumables are in good condition and no costs are to be expected. The complete maintenance file, including invoices and detailed history since 1994, is available.
Here are the options and equipment available to this copy:
Genesis of a turbo icon — Conceived by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering to dominate Group A touring cars, the 1986–1987 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth took the humble Sierra shell and turned it into a homologation hero. Cosworth’s YB 2.0‑litre, twin‑cam 16‑valve turbo four was the beating heart, and the outrageous “whale‑tail” rear wing shouted its intent. Bodies were assembled in Belgium and finished to RS spec, with roughly 5,5k standard 3‑doors built, plus 500 RS500 homologation specials by Tickford in 1987, bringing total 3‑door Cosworths to about 6,045.
Why 204 hp mattered — On paper the launch car’s 204 hp (150 kW) seemed conservative; in practice it delivered real 150‑mph pace, huge mid‑range urge and ironclad stability. Period testers from Autocar and CAR praised its giant‑killing speed and high‑speed aero balance, while noting some turbo lag and a workmanlike Sierra cabin. Recaro buckets, lattice 15‑inch alloys and that vast tail turned a fleet special into a road racer.
Racing and rallying bite — The RS instantly became the weapon of choice in Group A. Eggenberger Motorsport Sierras famously crossed the line 1–2 at the 1987 Bathurst 1000 before a later disqualification over wheel‑arch irregularities, but the writing was on the wall: with the RS500 upgrade, Sierras dominated late‑’80s touring car grids across Europe, Britain and Australia. In BTCC, Andy Rouse and co. turned the Cosworth into a serial winner (’88 especially). Meanwhile, Ford took the RS into Group A rallying; Didier Auriol’s win at the 1988 Tour de Corse was a headline moment, and names like Stig Blomqvist hustled the tail‑happy RWD Cossie on loose stages before 4x4 Sapphire/Escort eras arrived.
Culture, critique and curios — The Sierra Cosworth lit up magazine covers, dealer forecourts and, infamously, UK insurance blacklists as a theft magnet. Its whale‑tail became as recognisable as a 911 ducktail. The car remains a darling of Fast Ford culture, and turns up in modern video games and countless YouTube builds; the rarer RS500 often steals the limelight, but the original 204‑hp 3‑door is the purest expression of Ford’s intent. Advertisements of the day leaned into racing success, while reviewers lauded its motorway composure and giant‑killing cross‑country pace.
Lasting impact — Beyond trophies, the Sierra RS Cosworth re‑ignited Ford’s RS brand credibility and established the turbocharged, four‑pot template that later fed into Sapphire 4x4s, Escort Cosworths and, much later, Focus RS models. Today, good 3‑doors are blue‑chip classics: raw, fast and wonderfully analogue — exactly what petrolheads still crave.
