Born from a small French marque with big personality, the PGO Speedster II is the car that put PGO Automobiles on the map. PGO was founded in 1985 by brothers Gilles and Olivier Prévôt in the Cévennes region of southern France, first crafting replicas before daring to build its own type‑approved sports car. The Speedster II debuted at the turn of the millennium and entered production in 2002, channeling the spirit and proportions of 1950s European roadsters while being engineered around a modern, mid‑engine, rear‑drive layout and a tubular steel spaceframe with a lightweight composite body.
Early Speedster II models used naturally aspirated PSA power (1.6 and later 2.0 16v), and won enthusiasts with their sub‑tonne kerb weight, tactile steering and handcrafted charm, even if ergonomics and weather sealing drew period criticism. A pivotal moment came in 2005, when Kuwait’s Al‑Sayer Group invested in PGO, financing a more industrialised build, higher trim quality and broader homologation. PGO spun the basic recipe into siblings: the more athletic Cévennes and the targa‑style Hemera, yet the Speedster II remained the purist’s open two‑seater.
The major upgrade enthusiasts look for arrived around the end of the 2000s, when PGO adopted the BMW/PSA 1.6‑litre turbocharged Prince engine in 184 hp tune, paired with a 6‑speed manual. This brought a step‑change in performance (approx. 0–100 km/h in the mid‑sixes, ~225 km/h top speed) and drivability thanks to generous low‑end torque, while concomitant running changes improved braking (ABS availability), refinement, interior materials and NVH. The car kept its core ingredients—compact footprint, mid‑engine balance, and bespoke coachbuilt feel—only now with the punch to match its looks.
Competition for the Speedster II never fit neatly into a segment. Its appeal overlaps with low‑volume, characterful roadsters like the Morgan 4/4/Plus 4, Wiesmann MF3, Caterham and the universe of 356‑inspired specials; yet PGO stood apart as a manufacturer with European type approval and its own chassis rather than a kit‑car base. In the right spec, it could even tease entry‑level Porsche Boxster drivers on a twisty road, its sub‑1000 kg mass and mid‑engine poise doing the talking.
Fun facts? The name of the company’s region—Cévennes—became the moniker of its spicier sister model. Many Speedster IIs were built to order with personalised colours, hides and even matched luggage; you’ll often spot them in fashion shoots and lifestyle features because the retro silhouette photographs beautifully. Contemporary French reviews praised the steering feel and the sense of occasion at modest speeds, while noting idiosyncrasies like pedal placement and a cabin that felt more artisan than industrial. For a boutique brand, the Speedster II 1.6 T 184 hp was the moment everything clicked: the look, the noise, and finally the go to back it up.
