Historique du Modèle

When Porsche unveiled the water‑cooled 996 generation, the purists’ debate about radiators and headlights got loud. The 996 Turbo (2001–2005) silenced most of it with numbers and pedigree. Its 3.6‑litre twin‑turbo flat‑six used the so‑called Mezger architecture derived from the 911 GT1 Le Mans programme, and from launch the Turbo already wore the “facelift” clear‑lens headlamps many associate with later 996.2 Carreras. Production ran through 2005, with continuous detail updates, the addition of a Cabriolet (2004) and a swansong Turbo S (2005).

At 420 PS and 560 Nm, the Turbo delivered the kind of thrust that made supercar rivals blink, yet did it with all‑weather all‑wheel drive, tight body control and everyday civility. A 6‑speed manual (or 5‑speed Tiptronic S) teamed with PSM stability control, huge 330 mm brakes and, optionally, the then‑exotic PCCB ceramic discs. With clean aero, an integrated intercooler‑feeding nose and a fixed rear wing, Porsche claimed ~4.2 s to 100 km/h and ~305 km/h flat out—numbers that put it toe‑to‑toe with the Ferrari 360 Modena, and later needled the new‑to‑market Lamborghini Gallardo.

Crucially for the enthusiast crowd, the Turbo’s engine sat apart from the regular 996 Carreras: no IMS worries here, just a stout dry‑sump‑style block happy to digest boost. Porsche leaned into that with the factory X50 Powerkit—larger K24 turbos, bigger intercoolers and ECU tweaks—for 450 PS long before the Turbo S made it standard alongside PCCB. A rare AeroKit Turbo, sport chassis and a mechanical rear LSD were among other tasty options.

Period testers loved its dual‑nature. It could crush a wet B‑road at dawn, commute at dusk, and lap a track the next morning without drama. Many magazines called it the archetypal “everyday supercar,” a theme TV shows picked up repeatedly when benchmarking contemporary exotics. Owners discovered that in the real world—rain, cold tyres, sub‑perfect tarmac—the Turbo’s traction and torque often humbled higher‑strung Italians.

There are curiosities. The 2004 Turbo Cabriolet revived a blown drop‑top lineage last seen on the 930 Turbo Cabrio of the late ’80s. PCCB, offered here before most rivals dared, made the Turbo one of the first series‑production cars you could buy with carbon‑ceramic brakes. And while the 996 shape took time to be loved, the Turbo’s stance—wide hips, deep inlets, purposeful wing—aged into a cult favourite. Today, it’s prized for delivering Mezger muscle, huge tuning headroom and real usability at sane running costs. In the 911 family tree, the 996 Turbo didn’t just defend the badge; it reset expectations of what a supercar could be Monday through Sunday.
