Our Porsche 911 Type 964 Targa 4, first registered on October 19, 1990, has covered 223,281 km. Originally delivered in Germany, this example is now registered in France. Its ownership history is partially known, with two recorded owners in France.
This example is finished in the rare Amethyst Metallic (L38A) paintwork, paired with a black partial leather interior (LT). The bodywork is in good overall condition, showing only light age-related wear consistent with its mileage and era. The cabin is particularly well preserved, with an attractive original patina, no significant wear or tears, and plastics in very good condition. All instrumentation functions perfectly.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six producing 250 hp, paired with a manual gearbox and Porsche all-wheel drive. This configuration delivers a unique driving experience, enhanced by the traction of AWD and the timeless appeal of the Targa body style.

When the 964-generation 911 arrived in late 1988, Porsche called it 85% new, and the Carrera 4 Targa distilled that transformation into one very distinctive package. Built mainly from 1990 to 1992, it paired the classic removable-roof Targa silhouette and brushed roll hoop with the 959-inspired all-wheel-drive system that debuted on the 964. The idea was simple but bold: keep the air-cooled 911 character yet make it friendlier, faster across seasons, and more refined.
Under the decklid sat the new 3.6-litre M64 flat-six with 250 PS, Bosch Motronic, and a broader torque curve than the outgoing 3.2. The AWD hardware used an electronically controlled centre differential and a rear limited-slip, defaulting to a notably rear-biased split. Power steering, ABS, and coil springs (replacing torsion bars) were standard—modern kit that made the 964 a far more usable everyday 911.
Period testers loved the traction and composure of the Carrera 4 in foul weather, though some noted the extra mass and gentler steering feel versus the lighter rear-drive Carrera 2. In the Targa, that duality sharpened the car’s charm: roof off, the flat-six beat filled the cabin; roof on, it remained a tight, all-weather sports car. Contemporary ads leaned into that breadth—snow-dusted imagery and taglines trumpeting four driven wheels on a 911.
Competition at the time was intriguing rather than direct: Ferrari’s 348 offered drama but no AWD and no open-roof variant with similar security; Audi’s Quattro family and Nissan’s R32 GT-R proved the grip advantages of all-wheel drive, yet neither matched the 911’s rear-engine charisma. For Porsche, the 964 Carrera 4 was important brand medicine. It reassured loyalists that innovation (power steering! ABS! AWD!) could coexist with the 911’s essential feel, stabilising the company as the 1990s recession bit.
Fun fact: the 964 Targa is the last classic, removable-panel Targa before the 993 ushered in a sliding-glass concept. That detail has made 964 Targas, especially the C4, a cult favourite. Production was relatively low—only a small fraction of 964 output—adding to their desirability today. The wider 964 family has popped up often in popular culture (most famously a 964 Turbo in Bad Boys), reinforcing the era’s cool factor even if the humble Targa 4 played a quieter role.
Three decades on, the 964 Carrera 4 Targa reads like a sweet spot: analogue and air-cooled, yet civilised; a roof you can stash in the front trunk; and four driven wheels that make every season 911 season. For many enthusiasts, that balance is the point.
