By 2008, Porsche faced a familiar challenge: keep the 911 faithful while pushing technology forward. The answer was the 997.2, and at its heart sat the Carrera S 3.8 with direct fuel injection and 385 hp. On sale from 2009 to 2012, it replaced the earlier M97 unit with the new MA1 flat-six, notable for its cleaner emissions, stronger mid‑range, and the quiet deletion of the troublesome intermediate shaft bearing that had haunted earlier water‑cooled 911s. Top Gear featured the facelifted 911 in comparisons and lauded the depth of its engineering even as it ribbed the button layout.
Enthusiasts also remember the options that sharpened it further: PTV with a mechanical limited‑slip diff, the -20 mm sport suspension, and Porsche Sports Exhaust, which added some theatre to the more muted DFI note. Late in the run, the 408 hp Carrera GTS grabbed headlines, but the S remained the sweet spot—lighter and a touch purer, with that classic narrow‑body stance in coupe or cabriolet form.
