This Volkswagen Golf GTI 16S, with only 37,700 km of origin, was put into circulation in 1986 in France, it had only three owners, the last one taking possession in 2021.
The exterior comes in a White hue, combined with fabric upholstery with the iconic “UQ” pattern, in excellent condition. The artificial leathers, plastics and fabrics in the cabin have been carefully preserved. The car is equipped with ATS “Cup” rims for a sporty touch, but original rims are also available.
Under the hood, this Golf GTI 16S features a 1.8L petrol engine developing 140 horsepower, combined with a manual gearbox. Fully monitored by specialists, this car has a complete maintenance book, accompanied by all invoices and original documentation. The last overhaul was done in March 2024, and the consumables are in very good condition. No costs are to be expected.

The Mk2 Golf GTI had a hard act to follow. After the Mk1 more or less invented the hot‑hatch recipe, Volkswagen’s second‑generation GTI (1984–1992) set out to refine it. The 1.8 16‑valve version—often quoted at 139 PS/140 hp—arrived in 1986 as the sharpest factory GTI of the era, answering the hot‑hatch horsepower race while keeping the everyday civility that made the badge famous.
Under the bonnet sat the high‑revving KR‑code four, with a Bosch KE‑Jetronic (CIS‑E) mechanical‑electronic injection and a free‑breathing 16‑valve head. It didn’t explode off idle like some turbo rivals, but it came alive above 4,000 rpm and pulled hard to the redline—period testers loved the elastic top‑end. In many European markets the car was good for the mid‑8s to 100 km/h and around 215 km/h flat out, all while returning respectable fuel economy and commuting manners.
Competition sharpened it. Peugeot’s 205 GTi (1.6 then 1.9), Renault’s 5 GT Turbo, Ford’s Escort XR3i and Opel/Vauxhall’s Kadett/Astra GSi defined an arms race of power, weight and poise. Critics often called the 205 the more playful hooligan, but praised the Golf’s polish: unflappable high‑speed stability, communicative steering and vault‑like build. The classic red‑pinstriped grille, twin inner driving lamps and tidy stance became rolling brand equity for Volkswagen—GTI as a sub‑brand truly crystallised with the Mk2.
Year‑to‑year it evolved quietly. The 16V joined the 8‑valve in 1986; catalysts trimmed output to roughly 129 PS in some markets; a 1989 facelift added the famous “big bumpers,” larger brakes on many specifications and updated trim. Optional ABS, power steering and BBS cross‑spoke alloys nudged it upscale without blunting the fundamental simplicity of front‑engine, front‑drive, five‑speed fun. On the fringes, the blown G60 cars grabbed headlines, but the naturally aspirated 16V remained the purist’s pick.
There are fun footnotes. Owners still debate 8V torque versus 16V revs; small‑bumper versus big‑bumper looks. The golf‑ball gearknob endured as a wink to the original. The car turned up in countless European TV adverts and magazine road tests and, later on, became a staple of driving video games, cementing its cultural afterlife. VW’s annual Wörthersee GTI Treffen helped elevate it from quick hatchback to cult object, with period tuning from Oettinger, ABT and GTI Engineering adding to the lore.
In period, magazines lauded its breadth of ability: a car you could track on Sunday and commute in on Monday. It helped Volkswagen dominate the hot‑hatch conversation well into the 1990s, and when the Mk3 took over in 1992, many enthusiasts kept the Mk2 flame alive precisely because it struck that golden mean—useable, durable and properly quick when you asked for it.
