To succeed the Bugatti Chiron, the Alsatian brand has a lot to do. Produced since 2016 and a true automotive flagship, the Chiron marks the end of its production in May 2024 with the Ultimate, which celebrates the model's journey. To replace the Chiron and its 1500 to 1600 horsepower W16, Bugatti, and its new director Mate Rimac, are unveiling a completely new engine.

The chosen one is a unique naturally aspirated V16 engine, marking a new era for the manufacturer. This novelty will not be the only one, as the model unveiled on June 20, 2024 and scheduled for production in 2026 is designed from scratch. Here is the Bugatti Tourbillon and its V16 hybrid, developing a whopping 1,800 horsepower.

The Bugatti Tourbillon is recognizable at first glance, although it must be admitted, its design is not revolutionary compared to that of the Chiron. Its proportions are entirely new, with the aim of applying the philosophy “form follows performance”. Four design elements are notable on the Tourbillon. The horseshoe radiator grill, a Bugatti symbol, is slightly wider here to channel the air into the radiators. The overall line is lower and more squashed overall, with a refined front end and a lower driving position to optimize aerodynamics. The central edge, inherited from the famous Type 57 SC Atlantic, crosses the entire body and honors the design of Ettore Bugatti. Finally, the Tourbillon maintains the traditional two-tone combination, delimited by the C-line, this time more lively and angular.

The overall impression is a car ready to pounce, with aerodynamic capabilities inspired by the peregrine falcon. Note also the choice of electrically operated dihedral doors, making it possible to offer more space during installation on board. At the rear, the Tourbillon is equipped with a monoblock light that follows the curves of the body, allowing in particular the evacuation of hot air. The rear wing, on the other hand, remains very discreet because it is incorporated directly into the body, leaving the design pure.

The Tourbillon has no unnecessary accessories. All the aerodynamic appendages, body details and shapes used are at the service of performance. Its dimensions vary somewhat compared to the Chiron, with an additional 11 cm in length and 13 cm in width, while its height is reduced by 3 cm. These variations are in particular due to the installation of the V16, which is longer than the previous W16 due to its architecture.

The entrance into the cabin plunges us into a design that is refined to the extreme and designed to be timeless. The Tourbillon's only controls are placed on a floating solid aluminum console, sheltered under crystal glass. Analogue instruments are back on track, with three counters made by Swiss watchmakers. The steering wheel, mounted on a fixed hub, makes it possible to maintain a perfect view of the instrumentation. The only technological deviation authorized by Bugatti: a multimedia screen hidden in the center console and deployable on command. The lowered driving position and the fixed seats enhance the sensations of a single-seater, while the adjustable pedals, taken directly from the competition, complement the specificities of the cabin.

The Tourbillon's performances, aided by aerodynamics, are impressive. The 8.3L V16 engine develops 1000 horsepower, and is combined with 3 electric motors for an additional 800 horsepower. Acceleration exercises are a formality, with a 0 to 100 km/h (2sec), 200 (5sec), 300 (10sec) and 400 km/h in 25 seconds.

By way of comparison, by the time the Chiron reached the 400 km/h mark, the Tourbillon was already one kilometer ahead. The maximum speed, which is electronically limited, is 445 km/h, and probably well below real capacities, with the speedometer up to 550 km/h giving an index of potential performance. Hybridization integrates perfectly into Bugatti technology, allowing the Tourbillon to travel 60 kilometers in electric mode. Mate Rimac's knowledge in this field is undoubtedly a major asset for the Alsatian brand.

The Bugatti Tourbillon will start production in 2026 and may have some surprises in store for us with special versions to, who knows, set the speed record by exceeding 500 km/h.
