When Audi launched the B9-generation RS 4 Avant at the 2017 Frankfurt IAA (2018 model year), it doubled down on a formula the brand practically owns: a discreet, blister-arched estate with supercar-like real‑world pace. The big change was under the bonnet. Out went the high-revving V8 of the B7/B8 era; in came the EA839 2.9-litre twin‑turbo V6 shared with the RS 5 and related Porsche applications. Power stayed at 450 PS, but torque swelled to 600 Nm from just 1,900 rpm, neatly answering ever-tightening emissions rules while making the RS 4 even quicker in everyday use.
The RS 4’s identity has always been tied to quattro, and here the permanent AWD system uses a self-locking centre differential (default 40:60 front‑rear) with an optional rear sport differential to actively apportion torque across the axle. An 8‑speed Tiptronic replaced the old dual‑clutch, chosen for its strength and smoothness with high torque. Audi Sport matched that hardware with RS-specific five‑link suspensions, optional Dynamic Ride Control and big brakes (carbon‑ceramics optional), so the Avant could deliver consistent speed on bumpy B‑roads as well as on the Autobahn.
Competition in the fast-wagon niche was fierce and fascinating. For much of its life the B9 sparred with the V8-powered Mercedes‑AMG C63 S Estate (W205), later joined by the BMW M3 Touring (G81) and the Alpina B3. Reviewers routinely praised the Audi’s monstrous traction, cross‑country pace and family‑car ease, while often wishing for more exhaust character and a bit more steering feel. Still, few cars covered ground so quickly in the wet with skis, dogs or prams in the back.
In 2020 a facelift brought sharper styling (wider Singleframe grille, larger intakes, new lights) and a much-improved cabin with the 10.1‑inch MMI touch display, plus steering‑wheel RS1/RS2 quick modes. The engine remained at 450 PS, now cleaner under WLTP/OPF constraints, yet official 0–100 km/h stayed at 4.1 s. In 2022 Audi added Competition and Competition Plus packages with faster TCU mapping, a louder exhaust, sticky tyres and the RS Sport Suspension Pro coilovers, trimming 0–100 km/h to a quoted 3.9 s and lifting top speed up to 290 km/h when equipped appropriately.
Beyond brochures, the B9 RS 4 became a YouTube and Autobahn hero, frequently clocking an indicated 300 km/h in derestricted sections and earning a cult following among enthusiasts who loved its “Q‑car” subtlety. Critics at Evo, Autocar and Top Gear lauded its all‑weather capability and wagon usefulness, keeping the RS 4 firmly in the public eye even as SUVs exploded in popularity. Near the end of its 2018–2024 run, Audi marked the RS 4 lineage with special editions in select markets, underscoring the model’s 25‑year heritage that began with the original B5. For petrolheads, the B9 proved that the fast estate is alive and well—and still very much an Audi thing.
