The 296 GTB arrived in 2022 as Ferrari’s first V6-powered, Ferrari‑badged mid‑engined berlinetta since the Dino era, and as Maranello’s second series plug‑in hybrid after the SF90. Its name says it all: “29” for the 2.9‑litre capacity, “6” for the cylinder count, and GTB for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The car’s mission was twofold: to replace the F8 Tributo with something more compact and agile, and to prove that hybridisation could heighten, not dilute, Ferrari character.
At its heart sits the all‑new F163 120‑degree twin‑turbo V6 paired with an axial‑flux e‑motor nestled between engine and 8‑speed DCT. Ferrari’s engineers chased extreme responses and soundtrack; the ultra‑wide vee angle allows the turbos to live inside the “hot V”, lowering the centre of gravity and shortening intake paths, while a hot tube channels harmonics into the cabin. The result earned the affectionate nickname “piccolo V12” inside Ferrari, a nod to the V6’s soaring character.
On paper it stunned: a combined 830 cv with a WLTP electric‑only range of around 25 km, 0–100 km/h in 2.9 s and over 330 km/h flat out. On the road and track, period reviews from the UK, Europe and the US were emphatic, praising laser‑sharp front‑end bite, supple body control and the seamless choreography between combustion and electric thrust. Ferrari’s latest Side Slip Control, 6w‑CDS chassis sensor suite and brake‑by‑wire with ABS Evo helped the 296 GTB deliver huge pace yet remain approachable—several outlets handed it full five‑star verdicts.
Competition was fierce: McLaren’s Artura pursued a similar V6‑hybrid recipe, while Lamborghini’s Huracán (and later Revuelto), Maserati’s MC20, Porsche’s 911 Turbo S and Acura’s NSX Type S all circled the same price/performance orbit. Yet the Ferrari carved a distinct identity—smaller than the F8, more intimate to place, and devastatingly fast. The optional Assetto Fiorano pack (Multimatic DSSV dampers, extra carbon, Cup 2 R tyres and unique aero) pushed it into track‑day hero territory. In 2023 Ferrari added the open‑air 296 GTS, and on the racing side the 296 GT3 debuted with immediate impact, including a landmark overall win at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2023.
Culturally, the 296 GTB marked a confident pivot for the brand: electrification not as contrition, but as a performance amplifier. It has quickly become a darling of road testers and sim racers alike, featuring prominently in contemporary racing games and countless video reviews. Ferrari’s own communications revived the “fun‑to‑drive index” narrative, positioning the 296 as the sweet‑spot berlinetta—nimble, expressive and deeply engaging. For many enthusiasts, it’s the most intoxicating mid‑engined Ferrari since the 458, and a clear statement that the V6—done Ferrari’s way—belongs at the centre of the marque’s future.
