Historique du Modèle

The 296 GTS arrived as the open‑air counterpart to Ferrari’s seminal 296 GTB, revealed in April 2022 and entering customer production in 2023. It marked a watershed moment: Maranello’s first V6 plug‑in‑hybrid spider, and a spiritual nod to the Dino 246 GTS—another compact, mid‑engined V6 that won hearts in the early 1970s. The name follows classic Ferrari logic: “29” for the 2.9‑litre displacement and “6” for the cylinder count; “GTS” stands for Gran Turismo Spider. Positioned beneath the SF90 Spider but above the outgoing F8 Spider, it effectively became Ferrari’s mid‑engined open‑top halo for drivers who value delicacy and feedback as much as headline numbers.

Its technical heart is the F163, a 120‑degree twin‑turbo V6 that places the turbos in the hot‑V for a lower centre of gravity and razor‑sharp response. Sandwiched between engine and the 8‑speed DCT sits an axial‑flux e‑motor, creating a PHEV system good for 830 cv (about 818–819 hp) and 740 Nm. Ferrari’s engineers obsessed over the soundtrack, piping harmonic “hot‑tube” notes forward to craft what they cheekily called the “piccolo V12.” The retractable hard top folds in around 14 seconds at up to roughly 45 km/h, and the weight gain over the GTB is modest; performance claims (0–100 km/h in 2.9 s, over 330 km/h flat out) barely blink versus the coupe. An e‑Drive mode allows silent city running for around 25 km on the 7.45 kWh battery, and the car even reverses electrically—no mechanical reverse gear—to trim mass and complexity.

Ferrari doubled down on dynamics: brake‑by‑wire with ABS evo tied to the six‑way chassis sensor, an active rear spoiler that can add substantial downforce, and Side Slip Control 6.1 with Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer 2.0. For track diehards the Assetto Fiorano pack brings Multimatic spool‑valve dampers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, extra carbon aero and a signature 250 LM‑inspired livery. The result is a spider that feels startlingly close to the GTB for precision, yet brings that extra sense of occasion with the roof stowed.

Competition was immediate and fierce: McLaren’s Artura (later the Artura Spider), Maserati’s MC20 Cielo and Lamborghini’s Huracán variants all circled the same price‑performance orbit, while Porsche’s 911 Turbo S Cabriolet provided an all‑weather benchmark. Period reviews from outlets like evo, Top Gear and Car and Driver praised the 296 GTS for its steering clarity, throttle response and the seamless integration of hybrid assistance; some early testers noted the usual learning curve with brake‑by‑wire feel on the road, but the consensus settled on class‑leading involvement. The 296 platform also helped Ferrari meet tightening emissions rules without sacrificing emotion—crucial brand currency—cementing the V6 hybrid as not just an efficiency play but a purist’s choice. Unsurprisingly, the GTS quickly became a staple of high‑profile YouTube tests and Ferrari’s own evocative launch films, the soundtrack doing as much heavy lifting for hearts and wallets as the spec sheet did for lap times.
