  • MMC version equipped with rare Metal Matrix Composite brake discs and aluminium front and rear clamshells
  • Official left-hand drive conversion with Lotus certificate
  • Original stamped service book and invoices from new

Our Lotus Elise S1, first registered on 7 July 1997, has covered 44,500 miles, equivalent to approximately 71,600 km. Originally delivered in the United Kingdom, it is currently registered in France. The current owner acquired the car in 2019.

This example is finished in the elegant New Aluminium / Titanium Silver paintwork, paired with a burgundy red leather interior. The bodywork presents exceptionally well with no notable defects, while the cabin has been particularly well preserved. All instrumentation functions perfectly.

Powered by a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 120 hp and paired with a manual gearbox, the Elise S1 remains one of the ultimate references for pure driving pleasure thanks to its featherweight construction and highly acclaimed chassis. This example also benefits from the desirable MMC specification, notably featuring Metal Matrix Composite brake discs as well as aluminium front and rear clamshells.

Historique du Modèle

The original Lotus Elise S1 arrived in 1996 like a bolt of lightweight lightning. Conceived under Romano Artioli’s tenure and engineered around Richard Rackham’s radical bonded-aluminium tub, it proved a small British sports car could out-think, not out-muscle, the establishment. Shown first at the 1995 Frankfurt show, it was famously named after Artioli’s granddaughter, Elisa Artioli, who pressed the launch button. Beneath Julian Thomson’s delicate bodywork sat the Rover K‑series 1.8 and very little else; minimalism was the point, and the scales—circa 725–755 kg depending on spec—told the story.

Period road tests from titles like Autocar, CAR and EVO raved about the steering’s clarity, the supple ride on Koni dampers, and body control that made rivals feel blunt. Performance was honest rather than heroic—118 bhp did the job because weight didn’t get in the way. Contemporary competition ranged from Mazda’s MX‑5 and Toyota’s MR2 to Porsche’s new Boxster and even Caterham’s Seven; yet the Elise carved its own niche, delivering exotic-car tactility for hot‑hatch money. Waiting lists swelled and, crucially, Hethel’s balance sheet steadied—the Elise effectively saved Lotus in the late 1990s.

Running changes came quietly. Early cars used ultra-light metal matrix composite brake discs—great for unsprung mass, less so in the wet—before Lotus transitioned to conventional cast-iron rotors. Dealer-fit upgrade paths flourished: the Sport 135 kit woke the K‑series without spoiling its manners; track-biased Sport 160 and the wilder 190/VHPD packages fed into grassroots racing and Lotus Motorsport programmes. In 1999 the 111S variant arrived with the 143 bhp VVC engine and longer legs, while curios like the 340R showcased just how far the Elise’s architecture could be pushed.

It wasn’t all roses. Cabin squeaks, leaky soft-tops and the K‑series’ reputation for head-gasket woe drew criticism, though many issues were addressed by diligent maintenance and well-proven fixes (uprated gaskets, remote thermostats, alloy radiators). What the Elise gave back was magic: a front axle that talked, a rear that danced, and a throttle that let you paint lines with grams, not gallons. Media loved it—Top Gear-era presenters lauded its purity—and gamers met it in titles like Gran Turismo and TOCA, teaching a generation that lightness beats bloat.

Today the S1 120 hp remains the purist’s pick. No power steering, no ABS, no fluff—just an exquisitely communicative chassis and an ethos that re-centered Lotus around Chapman’s old maxim. It reset expectations for affordable sports cars, sired Exiges and later Elises, and reminded the industry that the cleverest performance upgrade of all is losing weight.
