Our Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, first registered on May 1, 1961, now shows 900 km since its restoration. Of French origin, it is registered in France and has had three owners: the first from 1961 to 1967, the second from 1967 to 2014, and the third since 2014.
This example is presented in an elegant Cream color, paired with a red interior. The bodywork is in excellent overall condition, with only a minor flaw to note, a small chip on a chrome element at the rear right. The interior is in excellent condition, with no notable defects. All dashboard instruments are fully functional, including the radio.
Under the hood, the 4-cylinder engine produces 105 hp and is paired with a manual gearbox. The engine runs perfectly, delivers good performance, and the overall behavior of the car is sound, both under acceleration and braking.
This example underwent a complete restoration between 2014 and 2021, covering the entire vehicle: engine, chassis, bodywork, and interior. The hardtop was also fully restored. Maintenance has been carried out by a classic car specialist, ensuring proper care for this type of automobile.

Unveiled alongside the 300 SL at the 1954 New York International Auto Show and produced from 1955 to 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (internal W/R121) distilled the Gullwing’s glamour into a more attainable, civilised roadster. Its long bonnet, delicate fins and clean flanks echoed the 300 SL, while a sturdy 1.9‑litre SOHC four, twin Solex carburettors and a fully synchromesh 4‑speed gearbox prioritised smooth grand touring over outright lap times.
Under the pretty skin lived a shortened Ponton saloon subframe with independent suspension—double wishbones up front and a swing axle at the rear—giving the 190 SL its signature blend of comfort and tidy responses. Against period rivals like the Porsche 356, Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, Triumph TR3 and MGA, the Mercedes traded razor‑edged handling for bank‑vault build, a weatherproof hood, an optional hardtop and long‑legged touring manners. Contemporary testers praised finish and refinement but wished for stronger brakes and a leaner kerbweight; the 190 SL would cruise all day, but it wasn’t a track scalpel.
Running changes were numerous if subtle. Early on, Mercedes even offered a competition‑minded Sports package with a small aero screen, lightened trim, stiffer suspension and higher‑compression engine bits; take‑up was limited and the kit soon faded, underscoring the car’s true mission as a GT. Through the years Mercedes fine‑tuned carburettor calibration, cam profiles and linkage geometry for better drivability, improved heating and trim details, and incrementally refined NVH. Official European output remained at about 105 PS DIN, though period U.S. brochures often quoted higher SAE gross figures. The hardware stayed old‑school in key areas—drum brakes all round to the end—but the 190 SL aged gracefully.
Crucially, it was a commercial hit. Around 26,000 were built, with a large share crossing the Atlantic to style‑conscious buyers. The 190 SL helped define “SL” for generations: a glamorous, usable two‑seater that made Mercedes engineering feel special at everyday speeds. Its presence in glossy period advertising, Riviera photo shoots and later in countless commercials cemented an image of sun‑drenched sophistication. Celebrities and socialites favoured them as much for ease of use as for looks, and the detachable hardtop made it a year‑round companion.
Today, enthusiasts cherish the 190 SL as a beautifully made, relaxed classic. Fun fact: synchronising those twin Solex carburettors is an art; many owners upgrade to carefully jetted Webers for consistency, and discreet disc‑brake kits and radial tyres are common touring tweaks. Yet the essence remains: a jewel‑like cabin, light steering, and a mellow four that will whisk you to the next coastline without drama. When the W113 “Pagoda” 230 SL arrived in 1963, the baton passed—but the template the 190 SL set endures in every SL since.
