Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupé (C205, 2016–2023) arrived as Affalterbach’s most extrovert take on the W/C205 C‑Class platform. After the naturally aspirated 6.2‑litre era, AMG’s new 4.0‑litre twin‑turbo V8 (M177) proved you could downsize and still deliver theatre: 510 PS, a tidal 700 Nm and a soundtrack that turned tunnels into concert halls.
Unveiled after the saloon and estate, the Coupé brought real hardware changes: a body widened by over 60 mm, broader tracks, unique rear axle location and aero tuned specifically for high‑speed stability. Early cars (pre‑facelift) used AMG’s 7‑speed MCT; the 2018 update added the 9‑speed MCT, the Panamericana grille, an AMG‑specific steering wheel, a configurable digital cluster and the AMG DYNAMICS suite. The S variant you’re looking at packed the e‑controlled limited‑slip diff, dynamic engine mounts and Race Start as standard, plus the switchable AMG Performance exhaust.
Its brief was clear: stare down the BMW M4, Audi RS 5 and Lexus RC F. Against the numbers‑focused M4, the C 63 S leaned into character—rear‑drive only, big‑torque punch, and an adjustable chassis that could do long‑legged GT one minute and smoky slides the next. Period road tests lauded the engine, steering precision and sense of occasion; weight and the earlier 7‑speed’s logic drew the main criticisms. The facelift’s 9‑speed and expanded drive‑mode brain notably sharpened it.
AMG’s DTM programme even wore the C 63 Coupé silhouette from 2016–2018, giving showroom cars an authentic paddock aura. Launch “Edition 1” cars, multiple Night/Performance Studio packages and late‑run “Final Edition” spec (market‑dependent) kept desirability high. Tuners like Brabus, RENNtech and Weistec turned the M177 into an 800‑hp folk hero, while the model became a staple in popular racing video games—further cementing its cultural reach.
More than a fast C‑Class, the C 63 S Coupé became a brand beacon: accessible AMG theatre with everyday usability. Its lasting impact is now even clearer—this was the final V8 C‑Class AMG before the hybrid four‑cylinder era.
