Description and Key Highlights of this Example

  • Factory Turbo Look (TLU), a particularly sought-after configuration
  • French origin, matching numbers
  • Rare triple blue specification with full extended leather interior
  • Complete service history from new with numerous recent invoices

Our Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet Turbo Look was first registered on July 8, 1992 and currently shows 129,500 km. Of French origin and delivered new by Porsche Saint-Maur, it remains registered in France and was acquired by its current owner in 2022.

This example is presented in the elegant F8 Midnight Blue Metallic finish, paired with a Navy Blue V8 full extended leather interior. This rare “triple blue” specification gives this 964 a particularly refined and desirable presence. Both the bodywork and the cabin are in very good condition.

Powered by the 3.6-litre flat-six producing 250 hp and paired with a manual gearbox, this Carrera 2 stands out thanks to its factory Turbo Look configuration (TLU). It therefore benefits from the wide bodywork, suspension and stance of the 911 Turbo while retaining the mechanical purity of the naturally aspirated Carrera.

Maintenance has been carried out with great care, initially within the Porsche network and later by recognized specialists, notably GT Sport in Limas (69). The vehicle retains its service book from delivery through 2000, complemented by a substantial file of invoices since then.

Consumables are in very good condition. The four Pirelli P-Zero tires were replaced in 2021 and show less than 20% wear. The brake discs are in good condition and both front and rear brake pads also show less than 20% wear.

The car is fitted with a RUF rear silencer. In 2023, major maintenance was carried out including engine sealing work, a recent convertible top mechanism, inspection and refurbishment of the front and rear suspension (front stops and boots), as well as the repair of the rear spoiler control unit. No expenses are to be expected.

Historique du Modèle

When Porsche launched the 964-generation 911 for 1989, it looked reassuringly familiar yet was said to be “over 85% new.” That was no marketing fluff: beneath the classic silhouette sat a wholesale technical reboot. Out went four decades of torsion bars; in came coil springs and revised geometry, standard ABS and power steering, and a slick new 3.6-litre flat six with twin-spark ignition. The first salvo was the Carrera 4, the 911’s first production all-wheel drive, its rear-biased torque split inspired by the 959. A year later the rear-drive Carrera 2 arrived, together covering the enthusiast sweet spot that this 250 PS Carrera variant represents.

The 964 also modernised the 911’s aero. Smooth, body-coloured bumper covers and undertrays dropped drag to about 0.32, while a party-trick electric rear spoiler rose at speed. Inside, you got improved climate control, available airbags (later standardised), and from 1990 the 4-speed Tiptronic automatic option—another first for the 911. Performance matched the looks: around 5.5–5.7 s to 100 km/h for manuals and roughly 260 km/h flat out, with the classic flat-six howl intact.

Early cars had a couple of well-known teething issues—oil leaks at the cylinder-to-head interface and dual-mass flywheel woes—addressed by Porsche with running updates (revised sealing, updated flywheel) and the distributor vent kit. By 1992–93 you also saw Cup-style 17-inch wheels on options lists and dual airbags in many markets. Body styles spanned Coupé, Targa and Cabriolet; special flavours included the lightweight Carrera RS (Europe), RS America (US), the wide-bodied America Roadster cabrio, and the wide-arched “30 Jahre 911” Carrera 4 Anniversary (911 units built).

On track, the Carrera Cup one-make series turned showroom Carreras into credible racers, while the brutally effective 964 RSR 3.8 racked up GT-class victories worldwide, including at Le Mans. Period reviewers praised the 964’s steering feel, braking performance and long-legged stability, while noting the high price and, in the C4, the extra mass and complexity versus the purist C2.

Culturally, the 964 bridged eras. It kept the air-cooled soul and compact footprint beloved by traditionalists, yet brought the safety, refinement and pace Porsche needed to compete with the Ferrari 348, Honda NSX and Corvette ZR-1. The generation even found pop-culture fame: a 964 Turbo starred in the 1995 film Bad Boys, cementing the shape in ’90s car lore, and today the 964 platform underpins many high-end restomods—Singer’s early projects notably used 964 donors.

In hindsight, the 964 did heavy lifting for the brand. It steadied Porsche through a tough early-’90s market, proved that a 911 could evolve without losing its essence, and set the template that the 993 would refine. For many enthusiasts, the 964 Carrera 250 hp is the sweet spot: analog, usable, charismatic—and crucial in the 911’s survival story.
