Our Porsche 911 Type 964 Targa 4, first registered on October 19, 1990, has covered 223,281 km. Originally delivered in Germany, this example is now registered in France. Its ownership history is partially known, with two recorded owners in France.
This example is finished in the rare Amethyst Metallic (L38A) paintwork, paired with a black partial leather interior (LT). The bodywork is in good overall condition, showing only light age-related wear consistent with its mileage and era. The cabin is particularly well preserved, with an attractive original patina, no significant wear or tears, and plastics in very good condition. All instrumentation functions perfectly.

Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 4 Targa, 1990–1992 — the last classic Targa with the brushed roll hoop and a lift-out roof panel, paired to the first all-wheel-drive 911 of the modern era. It blended open-air charisma with year-round security at a time when Porsche was reinventing the 911 under the skin.
Launched off the back of the 1989 Carrera 4 coupe, the 964 generation was about 85% new versus the long-lived G-series: coil springs replaced torsion bars, ABS and power steering arrived, aerodynamics were cleaned up with a neat electric rear spoiler, and the flat-six grew to 3.6 litres with twin-plug ignition. The Targa body rejoined the range for 1990, giving owners fresh-air driving without the full commitment of the Cabriolet—and, uniquely in period, with permanent AWD.
Porsche’s all-wheel-drive know-how filtered down from the 959: the Carrera 4 used a planetary centre differential and an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. In normal driving it biased torque 31:69 front-to-rear, but could vary flow to the front axle as grip ebbed, all supervised by wheel-speed and yaw sensors. Mated to the G64 5-speed and the 250 PS 3.6, the C4 Targa delivered brisk pace (about 5.7–5.9 s to 100 km/h) and resolute traction on rain-slick roads that used to humble rear-drive 911s.
Period testers praised the Targa 4’s all-weather assurance, strong brakes and iconic air-cooled soundtrack, while noting a little extra mass and slightly muted steering feel versus a C2. The roof panel folded and stowed in the frunk; on the motorway, some wind rustle was part of the charm. Rivals spanned from Ferrari’s 348 ts (another targa-roofed sports car) to Honda’s space-age NSX and the Corvette ZR-1, yet the Porsche’s everyday usability and compact footprint kept it in a niche of its own. As an AWD sports icon, it pre-dated Japan’s Skyline GT-R phenomenon in many western markets and helped normalise the idea of traction-led performance in a 911.
There were quiet running changes during 1990–1992: updates to the dual-mass flywheel, improved cylinder head sealing from MY1992 to tackle early oil weeps, and a ventilation kit for the belt-driven twin distributor to prevent ozone-related belt degradation—curiosities that became folklore among enthusiasts. Many cars wore the clean “Design 90” alloys; later, factory Cup wheels became a sought-after option.
In Porsche lore, the 964 was pivotal. It carried the 911 into the ‘90s without losing its soul, and the Carrera 4 badge founded a lineage that still defines the all-weather 911 today. For Targa devotees, this was the last hurrah of the classic hoop before the glass-roof 993: a sweet-spot car that mixes mechanical engagement, everyday civility and that unmistakable Targa silhouette.
