Porsche 911 (991.2) Carrera S — 2016–2019
Unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and on sale from 2016, the 991.2 Carrera S marked a pivotal moment in 911 history: the mainstream Carrera range went turbocharged. Out went the sonorous naturally aspirated 3.8; in came the new 3.0-litre twin‑turbo flat‑six (engine family 9A2). With 420 PS and 500 Nm from just 1,700 rpm, it delivered a wall of torque the old car simply couldn’t match, while trimming emissions and fuel use. Purists fretted about character and soundtrack, but Porsche engineered crisp response, an eager top end, and a still‑distinctive 911 timbre.
Beyond the engine, the Carrera S quietly became a technology hub. Rear‑axle steering, once the preserve of GT and Turbo models, was offered for the first time on a Carrera, sharpening turn‑in and stability. PASM adaptive dampers were standard and 10 mm lower, with a more focused PASM Sport (-20 mm) available. The GT‑style steering wheel arrived with the Sport Chrono rotary mode switch, while the PCM 4.0 infotainment finally brought a fast touchscreen, online services and Apple CarPlay. Outside, subtler styling hid clever aero: active front cooling flaps trimmed drag at a cruise; the new four‑point light signature and 3D rear lamps modernised the look; the rear grille gained vertical slats, and the optional sports exhaust switched to central pipes you could spot from a block away.
Performance moved the benchmark. With PDK and Sport Chrono, Porsche quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.9 s and a top speed up to 308 km/h. More telling was the Nürburgring: in launch guise the 991.2 Carrera S was officially timed around 7:30, roughly ten seconds quicker than its predecessor—helped by the extra shove, sharper chassis and sticky rubber. Period reviews from Autocar, evo and Car and Driver praised the real‑world pace and poise, often concluding it felt both faster and more exploitable, even if the exhaust note lost some romance versus the 991.1. Chris Harris’s TV and online segments echoed the theme: less shout, more thrust, same 911 magic.
Competition in period was fierce—Mercedes‑AMG GT S, Jaguar F‑Type R, Audi R8 V10, even McLaren’s 540C/570S—but the 991.2 Carrera S nailed the “everyday supercar” brief with rear seats, a useful frunk and uncanny ride/handling balance. It also set the template for the 992 that followed: all Carreras turbocharged, driver‑mode switching at your fingertips, and a chassis ready to swallow track days as readily as commutes. Fun footnotes? Porsche offered an Aerokit with a fixed rear wing for Cup‑car vibes, a 90‑litre long‑range fuel tank option for continent‑crushers, and a manual 7‑speed for die‑hards. The result was a car that broadened the 911’s bandwidth without dulling its edge—an inflection point that shaped every modern Carrera since.
