Historique du Modèle

Porsche 911 (996.2) Carrera 4S — 2002 to 2005

When Porsche revived the “4S” badge for the facelifted 996 in 2002, it wasn’t just a trim line; it was a statement. The Carrera 4S blended the drama of the 996 Turbo’s wide-hip body, brakes and chassis tune with the naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six and all-wheel drive of the Carrera 4. The result was a road-focused GT with a track-ready backbone — and one of the definitive sweet spots of the water‑cooled era.

Its emergence followed the success of the 993 Carrera 4S, which had shown there was strong appetite for a widebody, all-wheel-drive 911 without the complexity and cost of a Turbo. The 996.2 facelift brought cleaner “Turbo-style” headlamps, a tidier interior with improved switchgear and infotainment (PCM2), and the welcome return of a full-width red reflector strip across the tail — a visual nod to the 993 4S that enthusiasts loved. Under the skin, the 4S lifted the Turbo’s big red four-piston monobloc calipers clamping 330 mm cross-drilled discs, plus a stiffer, lower chassis on 18-inch wheels and fat 295-section rear tyres. PSM stability control was standard, while a 6‑speed manual or 5‑speed Tiptronic S took care of the shifting. The 320 PS flat-six delivered its best on a winding road, singing toward 7,000 rpm with classic air‑cooled timbre softened by water‑cooling refinement.

On launch, period road tests from titles such as evo, Auto Motor und Sport and Car and Driver routinely praised the C4S’s blend of grip, steering feel and day-to-day usability. It regularly finished on the podium in group tests against the BMW M3 (E46), Mercedes‑AMG CLK 55, Jaguar XKR and Maserati Coupé. While some still debated the 996’s move to water-cooling, the 4S proved Porsche could deliver everyday civility without dimming 911 character. It also helped bridge the price and persona gap to the Turbo, giving buyers the Turbo look and hardware without the lag or higher running costs.

Curiosities? The C4S’s illuminated reflector bar became an instant modern classic cue; many owners consider it the detail that “makes” the car. Porsche’s optional X51 Powerkit was available in select markets, nudging output beyond stock and adding special internals and a deeper oil sump — a factory‑sanctioned upgrade prized today. The 4S showed up frequently in early‑2000s media and adverts as the “everyday 911,” and plenty of celebrities and athletes were photographed in 996‑era cars; the 4S, in particular, appealed to those who preferred subtlety over a Turbo’s air scoops.

By the time production ended in 2005, the Carrera 4S had cemented its reputation as a connoisseur’s choice. It broadened the 911’s appeal, bolstered Porsche’s fortunes in the crucial pre‑Cayenne boom years, and today stands as one of the most desirable 996s — a car that looks like a Turbo, drives like a purist’s 911, and still begs for an early‑morning drive.
