Our Volvo PV 544 Sport was first registered on 12 July 1962. Its history from 1962 to 2010 is uncertain and cannot be reliably documented, meaning this model retains a certain degree of mystery surrounding its origins. It was acquired by Autoretrosport in Belgium in 2015 to be prepared for its current owner. It was imported into France following the preparation.
This example is presented in excellent overall condition, both mechanically and aesthetically. The full restoration carried out in 2015, together with the addition of numerous mechanical and cosmetic components, ensures excellent running condition and presentation. Finished in red and fitted with 5.5-inch grey wheels, numerous chrome details, two retro-style Cibié lights, a black sports steering wheel, two grey sliding bucket seats and black roll bars, this example is truly unique. The driver's bucket seat has a cosmetic defect.
Mechanically, this example is in perfect working order. It has notably benefited from a gearbox and rear axle overhaul, the addition of an electric fan and a new radiator, the installation of four Bilstein shock absorbers, new bushes and more. The B18 engine, producing 90 bhp in standard form, has been upgraded with, among other things, Weber 45 carburettors, increasing output to 130 bhp. It is paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. An expert report and invoices relating to the restoration are available. The latest service was carried out in November 2023 by Atelier Classic Auto. This car is ready to obtain its Historic Technical Passport, allowing it to take part in regularity rallies.
Here is the equipment added as part of the Historic Vehicle preparation:
Volvo PV544 (1958–1965) arrived as a thoroughly improved successor to the PV444, keeping the beloved humpback silhouette while fixing what owners and road testers had been nagging about. Out went the split screen; in came a single-piece curved windscreen and a far better driving position, with stronger seats and clearer instruments. It looked 1940s on the outside but felt late-1950s inside, and that contrast became part of its charm.
Under the bonnet the PV544 moved from the 1.6-litre B16 to Volvo’s legendary 1.8-litre B18 in 1961. Power ranged from the sensible single-carb tune to the twin-carb Sport that pushed the little Volvo to around 150 km/h, now with a slick 4-speed gearbox. Volvo’s newly invented three-point safety belt (1959, by engineer Nils Bohlin) was fitted on home-market cars and widely promoted, and the PV544 helped export Volvo’s safety-first reputation to the United States and beyond.
Competition proved the point. Tough, simple and shockingly durable, the PV544 became a rally giant-killer on gravel and rough roads. Gunnar Andersson took major European rally honours in PVs, and the fairy-tale moment came in 1965 when Kenyan brothers Joginder and Jaswant Singh won the Safari Rally in a PV544, beating far newer machinery. That single victory cemented the Volvo’s image as the indestructible underdog and sold cars on both sides of the Atlantic.
Period testers praised its roadholding on poor surfaces and its stamina—if not its quaint looks. American magazines called it a great driver’s car wrapped in yesterday’s suit, the sort you could flog daily and still love on a Sunday back-road blast. Owners did the rest: the PV544 became a cult object in Scandinavian hot-rodding and, later, historic rallying. The oft-quoted “130 hp” label is not a factory spec—the strongest showroom PV544s made around 90 hp SAE in twin-carb form—but tuners soon learned how to wake up the B18. With higher-compression pistons, a livelier cam, ported head, twin SUs or sidedraft Webers, and a tubular manifold, a streetable 120–130 hp became realistic; many also swapped in the 2.0-litre B20 from later Volvos, plus an M41 overdrive, Amazon front disc brakes and stiffer dampers.
By 1965 Volvo had moved on to the Amazon/120 and, soon after, the 140, yet the PV544 refused to fade. Around 244,000 PV544s were built, many still seen at rallies and shows, their “Humpback” nickname worn with pride. It’s the car that carried Volvo’s toughness and safety to the world—proof that heritage and honest engineering can outlast fashion.
