The Bentley Continental GT has been on the market since 2003. It is the first completely new model launched by Bentley after being bought by Volkswagen in 1998. Designed as a four-seater grand tourer, coupe or convertible, it ushered in the introduction of series production at Bentley, hitherto known for its handcrafted models in very low volumes.
The origin of the project dates back to 1994, with the Java concept presented in Geneva. Designed as a more accessible Bentley, this study was never mass-produced, except for a few units made for the Sultan of Brunei. The Continental GT makes this idea a reality, while maintaining artisanal assembly elements.
The design of the first generation (2003—2011), led by Raul Pires and Dirk van Braeckel, is based on the Volkswagen Group's D1 platform. It is powered by a 6.0 L twin-turbo W12, developing 560 hp and 650 Nm of torque, with permanent all-wheel drive. The model reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
It was unveiled in 2002 in Paris, then at Goodwood and Silverstone. The interior, equipped with a Breitling chronometer, offered several color and wood configurations. The musician Prince owned one, which has since been displayed in his Paisley Park estate.
