BMW Z4 (E85) 2.5i 177 hp, 2006–2008
BMW’s first-generation Z4 arrived in 2002 as a sharper, stiffer successor to the Z3, and in 2006 it received its pivotal facelift (LCI). That update is where the 2.5i 177 hp variant lives: under the bonnet sat BMW’s new N52 magnesium–aluminium straight-six with Valvetronic and double VANOS. It replaced the earlier M54-powered 2.5i (192 hp) with a more advanced, lighter engine, while the 2.5i’s 177 hp tune was designed to hit tax/insurance sweet spots in many European markets. Alongside came a revised six-speed manual and a new six-speed Steptronic auto, plus tweaks to the electric power steering and suspension that addressed early criticisms of steering feel.
Styled under Chris Bangle’s controversial “flame surfacing” era, the E85’s long bonnet and set-back cabin gave it classic roadster proportions, but with modern drama. The 2006 refresh quietly sharpened the visuals with new bumpers and lamps and raised perceived quality inside. The range broadened at the top with the Z4 M Roadster and, crucially, the fixed-roof E86 Z4 Coupé—though the 2.5i remained the accessible, purist-friendly entry into BMW’s six-cylinder open-top experience.
Competition in 2006–2008 was ferocious: Porsche’s 987 Boxster set the benchmark for steering purity; Mercedes’ R171 SLK mixed comfort with folding hard-top glamour; Audi’s second-gen TT arrived with quattro appeal; Honda’s S2000 and Nissan’s 350Z offered different flavours of high-rev and muscle. Period reviewers often praised the Z4’s body rigidity, rear-drive balance and creamy straight-six, while noting that Porsche still owned the last word in steering tactility. The facelifted car narrowed that gap; the N52’s smoothness and willingness to rev turned even the detuned 177 hp 2.5i into a sweet, usable everyday sports car.
Built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the Z4 symbolised BMW’s global manufacturing ambitions. It kept the brand’s image rooted in front-engine, rear-drive sports cars just as turbocharging and downsizing loomed. Fun fact: the N52’s composite magnesium–aluminium crankcase was a production-car first, helping save weight over the nose, while run-flat tyres and no spare contributed to packaging and safety decisions.
On TV, early Top Gear segments liked the Z4’s stance and noise but called out the steering; the LCI improvements and six-speed auto option broadened appeal. The Z4 also became a staple in period driving video games (think Gran Turismo and Forza), introducing a generation to the joys of a naturally aspirated BMW straight-six. Today, the 2.5i 177 hp sits in a sweet spot: lighter than later Z4s, still tactile, and often better value than Boxsters—yet every inch a BMW roadster.
