When BMW replaced the well-loved Z3 with the Z4 (E85) in 2002, it signalled a new, bolder era for the brand’s roadsters. Penned by Anders Warming under Chris Bangle, the Z4 embraced sharp surfacing and long‑bonnet/short‑deck proportions, and it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina — making it one of the rare BMWs exported to Europe from the US. In 2006 the range received a significant Life Cycle Impulse (facelift), and with it arrived the 2.5i 177 hp variant you’re looking at, powered by BMW’s new magnesium‑alloy N52 straight‑six. Production of this specific version ran from 2006 to 2008.
The 2006 refresh was more than a nip and tuck: new engines (2.0i, 2.5i, 2.5si, 3.0si), revised bumpers and lights, a six‑speed auto option and updated trim broadened the car’s appeal. The 2.5i sat neatly in the middle of the lineup, below the zestier 2.5si and 3.0si, and above the four‑cylinder 2.0i. The period also saw the debut of the fixed‑roof E86 Z4 Coupé and the ferocious Z4 M Roadster/Coupé with the S54 engine — halo models that lifted the entire Z4 nameplate in enthusiasts’ eyes.
Contemporaries were formidable: Porsche Boxster (986/987), Mercedes‑Benz SLK (R171), Honda S2000, Audi TT and Nissan 350Z Roadster. Against that crowd the Z4 staked its claim with a charismatic naturally aspirated straight‑six, rear‑drive balance and a driver‑focused cabin. Early Z4s drew criticism for their electric power steering’s numbness; the facelift brought retuning that improved feel. Run‑flat tyres (standard in many markets) sharpened responses but could make the ride brittle — a common talking point in period reviews.
The Z4’s media footprint was sizeable. It featured in major driving games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, bringing BMW’s roadster to millions of living rooms. On Top Gear, the Z4 regularly found itself compared with the Boxster and S2000; the presenters admired the BMW’s engine and stance, while often favouring rivals for ultimate steering feel — critiques that mirrored print‑magazine verdicts of the day. Yet long‑term testers praised BMW’s build, weatherproof soft‑top and year‑round usability, especially with the optional removable hardtop.
Looking back, the E85 Z4 2.5i 177 hp occupies a sweet spot: the classic roadster formula, a rev‑happy straight‑six with Valvetronic, manual or smooth Steptronic gearboxes, and that distinctive Bangle‑era profile. It helped cement BMW’s post‑Z3 identity in the roadster segment and bridged the brand to the later E89 generation. For enthusiasts, it’s a car that blends modern reliability with old‑school sensations — and one that sounds every bit as good as it looks.
