The DB9 GT Volante (2015–2016) was Aston Martin’s graceful farewell to the long‑running DB9 line and, crucially, the final naturally aspirated V12 convertible from the marque before the turbocharged DB11 era. Building on the heavily revised 2013 DB9, the GT badge arrived with extra power, subtle chassis and cosmetic tweaks, and a much‑needed infotainment refresh, all wrapped in the timeless Ian Callum/Marek Reichman shape.
Under its hand‑stitched leather and carbon weave, the GT Volante retained the bonded aluminium VH architecture and double‑wishbone suspension with Adaptive Damping. The familiar 5.9‑litre (5,935 cc) quad‑cam V12—internally AM11—was retuned to 540 bhp (547 PS) and 620 Nm, giving the open‑top GT a broader, more eager mid‑range without spoiling its creamy delivery. Aston kept the charismatic six‑speed Touchtronic II automatic and mechanical limited‑slip diff, prioritising gran turismo feel over the dual‑clutch arms race. Braking was suitably exotic: standard carbon‑ceramic discs (398 mm front, 360 mm rear) with multi‑piston calipers.
Externally, GT cues were discreet—badging, unique 20‑inch wheels, black anodised switchgear and paddles inside, plus revised stitching and trim options. A key upgrade was AMi III infotainment with a cleaner UI and improved navigation, addressing a frequent DB9 criticism. Performance hardly felt like a swansong: 0–62 mph in about 4.5 seconds and 183 mph top speed, the Volante maintaining impressive composure with the roof stowed beneath its neat tonneau.
The DB9 story had begun back in 2003 as the successor to the DB7, skipping “DB8” to avoid implying a mere V8 evolution. Over twelve years the DB9 evolved from elegant GT to a more athletic 2013 refresh, and finally the GT. In that time it cemented Aston’s modern identity—hand‑built, vocal V12s; beautiful proportions; grand‑touring poise. The GT Volante distilled that essence one last time. Against rivals such as the Ferrari California T, Bentley Continental GTC and Maserati GranCabrio, it traded outright tech for romance: hydraulic steering with feel, a naturally aspirated crescendo and a cabin smelling of real Bridge of Weir leather.
Pop‑culture loved the DB9’s silhouette—ubiquitous in video games like Forza and Need for Speed, and a regular on TV car shows where presenters called it one of the prettiest cars ever made. To mark Bond fever in 2015, Aston built the DB9 GT Bond Edition (150 units, Spectre Silver) as a GT highlight—though the limited run was primarily coupe, it underlined the GT’s role as a curtain call for the DB9 nameplate. Period road tests praised the GT Volante’s ride, steering integrity and operatic V12, while noting the ageing 6‑speed versus newer 8‑speed and DCT rivals. That hardly dented its appeal to enthusiasts: as the last open‑air, naturally aspirated V12 DB, the DB9 GT Volante has already earned its place in Aston lore.
