Historique du Modèle

The 2013–2016 Aston Martin DB9 “Phase III” was more than a facelift; it effectively merged the short‑lived Virage into the DB9 line, giving the marque’s core GT a new lease of life. Revealed for MY2013, it arrived with a stiffer VH architecture, sharper bodywork inspired by the then‑new Vanquish, and—headline change—a 6.0‑litre AM11 V12 tuned to 517 PS (510 bhp). It was the first DB9 to make carbon‑ceramic brakes standard, a statement of intent that this was a faster, more durable grand tourer.

On the road the Phase III felt like a DB9 turned up a notch: keener front‑end response, more composure from the Gen4 Adaptive Damping (Normal, Sport, Track), and that familiar creamy V12 now stronger across the mid‑range. Period reviewers loved the design and long‑legged refinement, often calling it one of the world’s most beautiful GTs, while noting the transaxle 6‑speed Touchtronic 2 automatic had become old‑school next to dual‑clutch rivals. Yet as a continent‑crusher the car was in its element—quiet when you wanted, glorious intake and exhaust timbre when you didn’t.

Competition in-period was serious: Bentley’s Continental GT (V8 and W12), Ferrari’s California/California T, Maserati’s GranTurismo MC, and—if you leaned more sports than GT—Porsche’s 911 Turbo. The Aston countered with hand‑built allure, classic proportions, and a cabin of Bridge of Weir leather and real metal. Options ranged from a sensational Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio to carbon exterior packs and lighter forged wheels.

Curiously, the DB9’s cultural footprint had already been cemented: earlier DB9s turned up in films (a notable cameo in James Bond’s Casino Royale via the antagonist’s car), on countless magazine covers and TV shows where presenters regularly called it a design benchmark. The Phase III kept that torch burning—familiar silhouette, cleaner surfacing, bolder grille—just more athletic and more resolved.

Two years in, Aston introduced the DB9 GT (2015) as the final flourish: 547 PS and a lightly refreshed cabin interface (AMi II). That didn’t erase the sweet spot of the 517‑PS model, which many enthusiasts still favour for its blend of purity, balance and everyday civility. In brand terms the Phase III DB9 did exactly what Gaydon needed between DBS and the incoming DB11: it protected Aston’s grand‑touring identity, retired the overlapping Virage, and kept the V12 GT flame brightly lit until the next chapter.

Highlights of the Phase III upgrade: stronger AM11 V12 (517 PS), standard carbon‑ceramic brakes (398/360 mm), stiffer and safer VH structure, Gen4 Adaptive Damping, revised aero and cooling, and subtly modernised interior trim and tech.
