Our McLaren 720S Performance, with only 20,100 KM on the clock, was put into circulation on February 2, 2018 in Monaco, where it benefited from impeccable follow-up before being imported into France in 2021. Its current owner purchased it the same year.

Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as internal project P14, the McLaren 720S replaced the 650S and reset expectations for the marque’s “Super Series.” Its carbon Monocage II, teardrop canopy and those dramatic “eye-socket” air channels weren’t just theatre: they fed and cooled a new 4.0‑litre twin‑turbo V8 while slimming drag. Underneath, Proactive Chassis Control II linked the dampers hydraulically to gift the 720S an uncanny blend of ride compliance and circuit poise.
From launch, the spec sheet read like a challenge to Maranello and Sant’Agata: 720 PS (710 bhp), 770 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 2.9 s, 0–200 km/h in 7.8 s and 341 km/h flat out. On the road and in the hands of testers, the car often felt even faster, quickly becoming an internet drag‑race legend that embarrassed bigger‑ticket hypercars. Yet the headline act wasn’t only speed. Reviewers raved about the glassy all‑round visibility, the natural, feelsome electro‑hydraulic steering and the way the aero and chassis worked the tyres without punishing occupants.
Competition was fierce—Ferrari’s 488 GTB/Pista (and later F8 Tributo), Lamborghini’s Huracán Performante/Evo and Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS/ Turbo S—but the McLaren carved a distinct identity: ghostly lightness, huge power‑to‑weight and almost telepathic damping. Period press plaudits poured in, with Top Gear’s Supercar of the Year (2017) and Evo’s Car of the Year (2017) among the gongs. Early criticisms focused on the occasionally laggy infotainment and the cold‑bite of the carbon‑ceramic brakes; both were minor footnotes against the main score.
Upgrades across the run were evolutionary rather than facelift‑level. McLaren Special Operations (MSO) curated striking launch themes (Velocity, Track, Pacific), expanded carbon packages and track‑leaning options. A Spider joined the range for 2019 with a retractable hard‑top and scarcely any weight penalty, and the Track Pack bundled McLaren Track Telemetry with cameras, lightweight seats, a titanium exhaust and harness prep. Customer racing spawned the 720S GT3 (and wild GT3X), while the road‑legal philosophy was distilled further into the limited‑run 765LT.
Cultural footprint? Substantial. The 720S co‑starred in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and it became a staple of modern racing games like Forza and Need for Speed. Its active rear wing—doubling as an airbrake—and double‑skin doors that channel air to the radiators became advertising calling cards. As production wound down in 2023, the 720S had firmly cemented McLaren’s reputation for engineering purity, handing the baton to the 750S which sharpened, rather than reinvented, the formula the 720S made famous.
