When AMG replaced the gullwing SLS with the Mercedes-AMG GT in 2014, it wasn’t merely chasing Porsche 911 owners—it was defining Affalterbach’s second in‑house sports car era. The GT S, launched alongside the base GT, was the sweet spot: a front‑mid mounted, dry‑sump 4.0‑litre biturbo V8 (M178) up front, a 7‑speed dual‑clutch transaxle at the rear, and an aluminium spaceframe in between for a near‑ideal 47:53 weight split. The turbos nestled hot inside the V kept the engine compact and the bonnet line low, and every V8 was built under AMG’s “one man, one engine” creed.

Unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show and on sale from 2015, the GT S arrived with 510 PS and 650 Nm, an electronically controlled rear diff, adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL, dynamic engine and transmission mounts, and serious brakes. It sprinted to 100 km/h in 3.8 s and ran on to 310 km/h—numbers that put it right in the crosshairs of the 991‑generation 911 Carrera S/Turbo rivals, plus Audi’s R8 and Jaguar’s F‑Type R. Reviewers loved its rabid throttle response, front‑end bite and theatre; some noted the DCT could feel grumpy at parking speeds, but few cars mixed long‑bonnet drama with such precision.

The model line widened quickly—GT R, GT C, later the Black Series halo—but the GT S remained the keystone. A 2017 facelift brought the Panamericana grille and chassis tweaks; for MY2018, output rose to 522 PS and torque to 670 Nm, while software like AMG DYNAMICS and Track Pace telemetry trickled in by 2019. Throughout, the formula stayed pure: rear‑drive only, double‑wishbone suspension, and a cabin that mixed classic Mercedes craftsmanship with turbine vents and a wide transmission tunnel sprouting AMG’s drive mode toggles.

Its cultural footprint was big, too. The GT S served as the official FIA Formula 1 Safety Car from 2015 to 2017, with Bernd Mayländer at the wheel—prime‑time exposure that burnished AMG’s performance image. Gamers met it across Forza, Gran Turismo and Need for Speed; ad campaigns leaned into its Affalterbach roots and Nürburgring development, paving the way for the later “Beast of the Green Hell” messaging.

Built at Sindelfingen with engines from Affalterbach, the GT S proved AMG could craft a world‑class sports car that wasn’t just a tuned Mercedes. By the time first‑generation production wound down in 2021, it had cemented itself as a charismatic alternative to the 911: louder, more muscular, yet technically sophisticated—a statement car that helped transform AMG from tuner to full‑line sports‑car maker.
