The Mercedes-Benz SLK 200K R170, launched in 1996, is a compact roadster produced by Mercedes-Benz until 2004. Built at the factory in Bremen, Germany, this first generation of SLK, named after German words Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light) and Kurz (short), marked a return of Mercedes to compact and agile models.
Designed in 1991 under the direction of designer Bruno Sacco, the SLK saw its final design validated in 1993, with a patent filed in September of the same year. Inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 190SL from the 1950s, it returned to four-cylinder engines and shared a wheelbase of 2.40 meters with its predecessor. The production version was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show on April 22, 1996, where it attracted attention thanks to its innovative retractable hardtop, a feature that would become one of its signatures.
A restyling in 2000 modernized its design and introduced updated engines, including supercharged versions (Kompressor), like the SLK 200K. This model laid the foundations for a Mercedes roadster line, which has evolved over the decades while remaining true to its compact and versatile origins.
