Born from a lineage of bellowing V8s, the Mercedes‑AMG C 63 S Coupé (C205, 2016–2023) marked the moment AMG shrank displacement but kept the theatre. Replacing the naturally aspirated 6.2‑litre W204, the C205 introduced the 4.0‑litre M177 twin‑turbo V8 with the turbos nestled “hot‑inside‑V”. Output in S guise stayed properly naughty at 510 PS and 700 Nm, with rear‑wheel drive only—deliberately so, to keep it the most traditional driver’s car in AMG’s line‑up.
It arrived as Munich’s BMW M4 and Ingolstadt’s Audi RS5 squared up in a turbo era, and later met Alfa’s Giulia Quadrifoglio on track days and magazine covers. Reviews across Europe and the US praised the muscle‑car attitude, thunderous soundtrack and huge mid‑range. Period criticism centred on traction and tyre longevity when pushed, and a ride that could be firm on broken tarmac—trade‑offs many enthusiasts gladly accepted for the drama.
AMG iterated during its run. Early cars used the 7‑speed MCT; the 2018 facelift brought the Panamericana grille, sharper LED lighting, the new AMG steering wheel with rotary mode dials, a 10.25‑inch centre screen and optional 12.3‑inch digital cluster. Under the skin, the S gained AMG Dynamics logic and, crucially, the 9‑speed MCT that broadened gears without blunting response. The S retained the electronically controlled LSD, dynamic engine mounts and adaptive AMG Ride Control that gave the Coupé its distinctive balance of civility and bite.
Specials added flavour. The launch Edition 1 riffed on AMG GT3 cues—matte paint, contrasting stripes and aero add‑ons—while late in life a market‑dependent Final Edition bowed with MANUFAKTUR magno paint, yellow accents and the Aerodynamics Package. The C63 S Coupé also became a familiar sight in AMG’s marketing around DTM and GT racing programmes, even if the race cars used different regs under the skin.
On screen and online, it was everywhere: Top Gear and countless YouTube tests revelled in smoky corner exits and that V8 thunder; drag‑races and track battles cemented its folk‑hero status. Fittingly, it has become more significant with time. Its successor (W206) pivoted to a four‑cylinder hybrid, making the C205 the last V8‑powered C‑Class. For many petrolheads, that grants the 63 S Coupé a future‑classic aura: the car that proved downsizing didn’t have to downplay character, and the final chapter of a storied AMG V8 era in this segment.
