From CL to S-Class Coupé — When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the C217 S-Class Coupé, it signalled the end of the CL era and the rebirth of the “S” badge on a grand touring two-door. Previewed by the S-Class Coupé Concept at the 2013 Frankfurt show and launched for sale in 2014 (with most markets seeing the S 500 Coupé on roads from 2015), it became the brand’s rolling technology flagship for those who preferred two doors and a pillarless profile.
Under the bonnet sat the M278 4.7‑litre biturbo V8, rated at 455 PS and 700 Nm, giving the S 500 effortless pace. Many markets delivered the car primarily as 4MATIC, while others offered rear‑wheel drive to enable Magic Body Control with the novel curve tilting function that gently leaned the body into bends. This tech, together with Road Surface Scan, turned the S 500 Coupé into a grand tourer that felt one step ahead of the tarmac.
Beyond the numbers, the S-Class Coupé traded on theatre. Optional headlamps set with up to 47 Swarovski crystals gave it a jewel-like signature, and the vast panoramic roof (with optional Magic Sky Control) bathed a cabin finished with flowing wood, Nappa hides and the dramatic twin-screen dashboard. Audiophiles chased the Burmester High-End 3D surround system with 24 speakers, while the driver assistance suite—DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist and more—made long hauls almost eerily calm.
Competition ranged from the Bentley Continental GT V8 to BMW’s 6 Series (and later Lexus’s LC), yet period reviews often praised the Mercedes for unrivalled ride isolation and interior opulence. Critiques tended to centre on its weight and the tight rear quarters, but few questioned its ability to turn a thousand kilometres into a short day’s work. In the United States it wore the S 550 4MATIC badge with identical hardware, earning plaudits for refinement and real‑world pace.
Running updates between 2015 and 2017 brought the 9G‑TRONIC gearbox to some versions and expanded smartphone integration, while a Night Edition in early 2017 added darker trim and AMG wheels. The bigger shift came after our period, when the 2017 facelift introduced the S 560 and OLED rear lights—but by then the S 500 had already cemented the C217’s reputation: a halo coupé that distilled S‑Class comfort and spectacle into a more intimate, GT-shaped package.
Curiosity: Mercedes loved showing the coupé’s “curve tilting” in adverts with sloshing champagne flutes; reviewers found the effect subtle yet uncannily soothing on sinuous roads—a party trick with genuine long‑journey benefit.
