The first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS (C219) exploded onto the scene in 2004 as the self-styled “four‑door coupé,” a sleek fastback on the E‑Class platform that prioritised style and a low roofline over traditional saloon pragmatism. AMG’s flagship arrived shortly after: the CLS 63 AMG (2006–2010), replacing the supercharged CLS 55 with the naturally aspirated 6.2‑litre M156 V8. Hand‑built in Affalterbach under AMG’s “one man, one engine” philosophy, it delivered the theatre and pace to match the car’s dramatic silhouette.
At a time when the segment’s rivals were more conventional supersaloons (think BMW M5 E60 and Audi S6/RS6 C6), the CLS 63 AMG carved out its own lane. It combined a charismatic, high‑revving V8 with the long‑legged composure of AMG‑tuned Airmatic suspension and the seven‑speed Speedshift 7G‑Tronic. Officially it was limited to 250 km/h, but AMG’s Driver’s Package raised that to around 280 km/h, and contemporary tests pegged 0–100 km/h at roughly 4.5 seconds—serious pace for a four‑seater with a proper boot.
The CLS’s impact on the brand—and the market—was outsized. Mercedes effectively invented a niche that others rushed to fill later: VW’s Passat CC/CC, Audi’s A7, and BMW’s 6 Series Gran Coupé all owe a nod to the C219’s template. The 2008 facelift sharpened the look with revised bumpers and grille treatments, new wheel designs, updated COMAND infotainment and driver‑assist options, keeping the CLS 63 visually current until production ended in 2010.
Critics of the day praised the engine’s immediacy and soundtrack—one of AMG’s greats—along with the car’s cross‑continent stride. Some noted the 7G‑Tronic wasn’t as snappy as dual‑clutch rivals and that rear headroom was the price paid for the beautiful roofline. Fuel thirst, naturally, was part of the deal. But the blend of elegance and menace gave the CLS 63 its own following; Clarkson and other commentators frequently lauded the original CLS as among the best‑looking cars of its era, and the AMG added the bite to match the bark.
A few curios: frameless doors and a strict four‑seat layout underlined its coupé ethos; buyers could raid AMG Performance Studio for larger composite brakes, 19‑inch wheels and the raised speed limiter; designo interiors made many cars feel genuinely bespoke. The CLS regularly appeared in high‑end European advertising of the late 2000s and became a quiet favourite among tastemakers who wanted something less obvious than an M5. Today, a well‑kept CLS 63 AMG C219 remains a connoisseur’s choice—part style icon, part muscle car, and a milestone in Mercedes design history.
