Porsche 911 (991.1) Carrera S Cabriolet, 2012–2015
When Porsche unveiled the 991 generation at the 2011 Frankfurt show, it marked the biggest architectural leap for the 911 since 1998. The Cabriolet arrived shortly after in 2012, carrying over the S model’s naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six with 400 hp, but draping it in a clever new soft-top with magnesium bows that preserved the coupe’s roofline. A longer 2,450 mm wheelbase, a far stiffer mixed-material body (with much more aluminium), and the debut of a 7-speed manual and the latest 7-speed PDK all aimed to broaden the 911’s bandwidth: faster, more efficient, yet more refined.
The 991 also introduced electro-mechanical power steering to the 911 road cars, a big philosophical shift that drew early criticism for muted feedback. Yet period tests still lauded the Carrera S Cabriolet for its huge real-world pace, tactful PASM ride, and the way Porsche’s chassis magic made a rear-engined, rear-drive 2+2 feel natural on challenging roads. With Sport Chrono and PDK, launch control catapulted the cabrio to 100 km/h in the low 4s; manual diehards got a world-first 7-speed H-pattern.
Factory upgrades played a key role. The Sport Chrono pack added dynamic engine mounts; PTV/PTV Plus brought a limited-slip diff and torque vectoring; PDCC curbed roll without wrecking ride; PCCB ceramics saved unsprung mass; the Sport Exhaust let the MA1 flat-six sing; and from 2013 the X51 Powerkit nudged output to 430 hp. A wind-tunnel-honed Aerokit Cup gave it a bolder stance. The later GTS (also offered as a cabrio) effectively packaged many of these enhancements at 430 hp as the 991.1 bowed out.
Competition spanned from the Audi R8 Spyder and Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster to the BMW M6 and, from 2013, Jaguar’s raucous F-Type. Against them, the 911 S Cabriolet’s USP remained the same: surgical precision, day-to-day usability, and that unmistakable flat-six character. The 991 platform promptly won the 2012 World Performance Car award, and magazines from Evo to Car and Driver praised its pace and polish, even as they debated the new steering’s soul. Top Gear and countless YouTube channels featured the 991 extensively; the Carrera S became a staple in racing games and online reviews, cementing its pop-culture presence.
Fun details? The cabrio roof can open or close in roughly 13 seconds at up to 50 km/h; a Sound Symposer channels intake timbre into the cabin; and the fold-down rear backrests turn the 2+2 into a surprisingly practical grand tourer with a front trunk to match. Most significant of all, the 991.1 Carrera S Cabriolet represents the final era of naturally aspirated 911 Carrera power before the 991.2’s widespread turbocharging—an inflection point that makes well-specified examples (especially with X51, PDCC/PTV, or PCCB) particularly coveted among enthusiasts today.
