Our Toyota GR Yaris Track, put on the road on January 10, 2022, totals 6,250 km today. Delivered new in Germany, it was imported and registered in Monaco, where it changed ownership on December 31, 2023.
Presented in Eclipse Black, combined with a leather and Alcantara interior, this GR Yaris is distinguished by its impeccable presentation. There is only a slight scratch on the rear bumper, with no other body defect. The passenger compartment, perfectly preserved, shows no wear and tear. When Toyota pulled the covers off the GR Yaris in 2020, it wasn’t just another hot hatch – it was a modern homologation-style special dreamt up by rally people for road people. Under Akio Toyoda’s enthusiast alter ego, Morizo, and with input from Tommi Mäkinen’s WRC outfit, Toyota approved a bespoke three‑door shell, mixed-platform chassis (GA‑B front, GA‑C rear), and an all-new GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. It was built on a dedicated line at Motomachi with a high proportion of manual assembly – a far cry from mainstream supermini production.
Heart of the car is the G16E‑GTS: a 1.6‑litre, turbocharged three‑cylinder that punches out 261 PS and 360 Nm in Europe. It drives through a six-speed manual with iMT rev-matching to the GR‑FOUR system that can bias torque front or rear (Normal 60:40, Sport 30:70, Track 50:50). Add the Circuit/High Performance Pack and you get Torsen LSDs front and rear, retuned suspension, stickier 225/40 R18 tyres and forged wheels. Aluminium panels and a carbon-fibre-reinforced roof keep weight down; a double‑wishbone rear end and serious brakes make it feel like a rally car with number plates.
Launched as a 2020 model, the GR Yaris immediately detonated the hot hatch segment. Waiting lists formed worldwide; Australia’s first allocation sold out in minutes thanks to keen pricing, and Europe saw demand far outstrip supply. Against rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST, Hyundai i20 N and Mini JCW, the GR’s AWD traction and rally-bred responses made it feel like a class of one. Magazine tests repeatedly crowned it: TopGear named it 2020 Car of the Year and Hot Hatch of the Year, while testers from evo to Autocar raved about its grip, steering and willingness to play. Common gripes? A slightly high driving position, a small boot and a workmanlike infotainment setup – none of which dulled the grin.
Its impact on the brand was huge. “GR” stopped being just a badge and became a movement, helping legitimise the GR86 and invigorating the Supra and later the GR Corolla. In the WRC, Toyota’s Rally1 machine carried the GR Yaris name and silhouette as it swept titles, burnishing the road car’s image. The car became a gaming staple in Gran Turismo and WRC titles; Chris Harris publicly bought one; and Toyota’s own ads leaned heavily into the “Born from WRC” story. Fun fact: Toyota targeted more than 25,000 units to satisfy homologation programmes – extraordinary in an era obsessed with SUVs.
By 2024 a facelift arrived with more power and options, but the 261‑hp original (2020–2024) remains the purist’s pick: a compact, feisty ball of boost and bite that rekindled memories of Celica GT‑Four glory – and reminded everyone that Toyota still knows how to build a cult classic.
