Alfa Romeo 4C Coupé (240 hp) — 2013–2020
When Alfa Romeo unveiled the 4C production car at Geneva in 2013, it wasn’t just launching a new coupé; it was making a statement. A carbon-fibre monocoque in a sub-1‑tonne, mid‑engined sports car at this price was almost unheard of. Built in Modena alongside Maseratis, the 4C mixed exotic construction with an unapologetically purist brief: no power steering, a turbocharged four with real shove, and a dual‑clutch gearbox that begged for paddle pulls.
The recipe drew from the marque’s history of compact, lightweight drivers’ cars, yet the engineering was thoroughly modern. The 65‑kg carbon tub, aluminium subframes and SMC composite body panels kept mass to a minimum, letting the 240‑hp 1750 TBi deliver supercar‑baiting acceleration. Early cars wore the controversial multi‑element headlamps; from 2015–2016 (market dependent) the coupé could be had with the Spider‑style projector units that most fans prefer. Ride and damper tuning saw quiet tweaks over the run, and Europe later added a gasoline particulate filter, subtly changing the exhaust note. Options such as the Track/Racing Pack (stiffer springs/dampers, thicker anti‑roll bar, forged wheels), brake upgrades, and an Akrapovič dual‑mode exhaust sharpened the focus further. The US‑spec cars arrived a little later with extra crash hardware and a handful of comfort mandates (including a rear‑view camera from 2018), nudging weight up.
Competition was fierce: Porsche’s Cayman (981, later 718), Lotus Elise/Exige and, from 2017, Alpine’s A110. The 4C stood apart. Reviewers praised its off‑the‑charts steering feel at speed, astonishing turn‑in and sense of occasion; they also criticised tramlining, a sometimes brusque low‑speed DCT calibration, and cabin NVH. Period road tests often concluded it was a flawed genius—yet one whose flaws were part of the drama.
Halo specials kept the spotlight on: the Launch Edition with carbon addenda and stiffer setup, the Competizione with matte finishes and factory Akrapovič, and the blue‑hued 4C Italia. On screen, the 4C became a video‑game regular (Gran Turismo, Forza, Assetto Corsa) and a TV favourite, starring in Top Gear and Jay Leno’s Garage. At Goodwood it sounded every bit the baby supercar as it clawed up the hill.
Beyond lap times, the 4C mattered to Alfa. It spearheaded the brand’s return to North America, rebooted its performance credibility ahead of the Giulia and Stelvio, and showed that lightweight still wins hearts. Production of the coupé ended by 2020, but its core ideas—less mass, more feel—remain a north star for enthusiasts.
