Description and Key Highlights of this Example

  • Unique roadster with retractable doors, an iconic signature of the model

  • 2.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 170 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox

  • Original French example, third owner

  • Documented history for much of its life and 58,500 km on the odometer

Our BMW Z1 was first registered on 11 April 1990 in France. This example currently shows 58,500 kilometres on the clock. It has had three owners since delivery: the first kept it until December 1998, the second until 2017, before the current owner acquired it.

Presented in Schwarz Metallic (code 278), combined with grey leather and nubuck camouflage-pattern upholstery, this Z1 features an original configuration, true to the model's unique spirit. The bodywork is in generally good condition, with some wear consistent with age. Inside, the seat leather shows a natural patina without tears, while the dashboard hood also reflects the car's age. The instrumentation functions normally.

Introduced in 1987 and produced in only 8,000 units between 1988 and 1991, the BMW Z1 represents a special chapter in the brand's roadster history. It is notably distinguished by its doors that retract vertically into the sills and by its exterior body panels made of synthetic material. Under the bonnet, its 2.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine delivers 170 hp. Mounted front-midship and paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, it contributes to the dynamic balance BMW sought when designing this distinctive roadster.

This example comes with BMW invoices covering much of its history. The doors were serviced at BMW in 2024. No mechanical or aesthetic modifications are reported. A left front wing was replaced due to a fibre crack, with no collision or accident reported.

Here are the main documented services and milestones:

  • 09/04/2025 at 57,568 km – Technical inspection, Blois

  • 26/02/2024 at 57,298 km – BMW, Chambray-lès-Tours

  • 23/02/2023 at 56,732 km – Technical inspection, Blois

  • 01/08/2020 at 54,715 km – Technical inspection, Blois

  • 07/05/2013 at 47,187 km – Val de Loire Autos, Blois

  • 07/05/2013 at 47,185 km – Technical inspection, Blois

  • 10/05/2011 at 43,501 km – Technical inspection, Blois

  • 25/06/2009 at 40,408 km – Val de Loire Autos, Blois

  • 23/06/2006 at 34,139 km – BMW, Blois

The tyres and brakes are reported to be in good condition. No expenses are expected at this time.

This BMW comes with two keys. Available documents include the administrative status certificate, invoices, the CarVertical report, the technical inspection, and a photo album.

The current owner, who has kept it for nearly ten years out of attachment to this car, is reluctantly parting with it to pursue a new project outside the automotive world.

Historique du Modèle

The BMW Z1 arrived as a rolling technology manifesto for Munich at the close of the 1980s. Conceived by BMW Technik GmbH—the company’s skunkworks founded in 1985—the two-seat roadster debuted at the 1987 Frankfurt IAA to huge crowds and immediate deposits. The name’s "Z" stood for Zukunft (future), and the car lived up to it: a steel monocoque with a smooth underfloor for aero efficiency, removable thermoplastic body panels you could unbolt and swap, and the now-famous vertically sliding doors that disappeared into the high side sills.

Production ran in low volumes from around 1988 to 1991 (series build chiefly 1989–1991), with roughly 8,000 units assembled in a dedicated pilot facility in Munich. Under the skin, familiar E30 325i hardware—most notably the 2.5‑litre M20 straight‑six with 170 PS—was paired with pioneering chassis work: a new multi‑link rear end nicknamed the "Z‑axle" that would go on to shape the handling DNA of the next‑gen 3 Series (E36). Front MacPherson struts, disc brakes all round and 16‑inch staggered tyres underlined the car’s sporting intent.

Contemporary testers loved the Z1’s balance and precision. The rigid central tub and aero undertray gave remarkable stability at speed; with 0–100 km/h in about 7.9 s and a 225 km/h top end, it wasn’t a missile, but the way it flowed down a road was pure BMW. Period criticism focused on price versus raw performance, plus the practicality tax of those deep sills when climbing aboard. Yet the doors—operable even on the move where legal—made every short drive feel special, and the removable panels meant some owners even changed colour schemes between seasons.

Context matters: the Z1 arrived just as the affordable Mazda MX‑5 (1989) reignited the classic roadster formula, while Mercedes’ R129 SL took the luxury open‑top crown. The BMW sat somewhere else entirely: a concept car you could actually buy. Its impact inside BMW was profound. The Z‑axle entered mainstream production, materials research on plastics and composites accelerated, and a lineage of "Z" roadsters followed—Z3, Z8, Z4—all owing a philosophical debt to the original.

Fun fact: body panels were designed to be swapped in hours, and BMW’s late‑’80s ads leaned hard into the sci‑fi theatre of those disappearing doors. The Z1 never officially sold in the U.S. and remained left‑hand drive only, adding to its cult aura. Rarity spawned intriguing offshoots too: Alpina’s Roadster Limited Edition (around 66 cars) upped power to roughly 200 hp from a 2.7‑litre derivative, while tuners like AC Schnitzer offered period upgrades. Today, the Z1 is cherished less as a numbers car and more as a bold, brilliantly engineered outlier that previewed BMW’s future.
