The Ferrari 328 GTS arrived in 1985 as the carefully honed evolution of the beloved 308, debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Pininfarina refined the wedge profile with smoother bumpers, a crisper nose and subtle aero tweaks, while under the rear deck the classic transverse V8 grew to 3.2 litres. Power in European, non‑catalyst trim landed at a healthy 270 hp, but the headline wasn’t just speed: the 328 ushered in notably better drivability, reliability and finish, becoming the best‑selling V8 Ferrari of its era.
Context mattered. The 328 faced the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2, Lotus Esprit Turbo, Lamborghini Jalpa and a wave of ever-faster front‑engined sports cars. Ferrari’s answer was usable performance: more mid‑range torque, friendlier ergonomics, improved heating and ventilation, and a chassis that felt both taut and forgiving on real roads. Period road tests from Autocar and Road & Track praised the car’s tractability and build, noting 0–100 km/h in around six seconds and a top speed just north of 260 km/h, while still pointing out the heavy low‑speed steering and the classic offset pedal box.
Over its life Ferrari kept refining. From mid‑1988, ABS became optional, bringing revised suspension geometry and the easily spotted ‘convex’ five‑spoke wheels (earlier cars wore concave rims). Market‑specific catalytic converters and minor ignition updates appeared, and detail improvements to trim and electrics crept in almost invisibly. Crucially, it remained the last of the transverse V8 Ferraris; its 1989 successor, the 348, switched to a longitudinal layout and a far more modern, edgy aesthetic.
There’s romance, too. The 328 GTS—GTS for its removable targa panel—bottles pure 1980s exotica: the gated shifter’s metallic click, a spine of induction noise from Bosch K‑Jetronic and Magneti Marelli ignition, and that unmistakable Pininfarina silhouette. It plastered bedroom walls and filled TV commercials and magazine covers of the day, becoming the poster Ferrari for a generation who wanted a car you could drive daily yet still call a thoroughbred. Today enthusiasts prize it for just that blend: classic feel with a welcome layer of polish.
Impact on the brand was significant. The 328 cemented Ferrari’s V8 line as a pillar alongside its 12‑cylinder flagships, proving Maranello could deliver reliability and finish to match excitement.
