Our Mercedes 230 SL W113 Pagoda, first registered on 12 September 1964, now shows 128,000 km. Originally from France, it is currently registered in France and has had three owners since first registration.
This example is presented in an elegant Graphitgrau – Graphite Grey (DB 190) finish, paired with a red leather interior. The bodywork features a very attractive paint finish, applied around twenty years ago, although there are some defects to note, including rust affecting part of the rear section. The cabin is well preserved, with the leather in good condition. Only the driver's seat has been reupholstered, while the rest of the upholstery retains its original patina. The dashboard instrumentation functions correctly.
Under the bonnet, the 2.3-litre straight-six produces 150 hp and is paired with a manual gearbox. This 230 SL, the first iteration of the iconic W113 generation, offers a smooth and enjoyable driving experience while retaining the characteristics that made the famous Pagoda so successful.
This example has been maintained by an independent specialist. It comes with invoices dating back to 2010, as well as period technical documentation.

This Mercedes comes with its administrative status certificate, invoices, technical inspection report, as well as its two keys.
The vehicle has been in the hands of the same owner since 2013.
Mercedes-Benz’s W113 230 SL arrived at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show with a mission: replace both the glamorous 300 SL and the lovable 190 SL with one thoroughly modern grand tourer. Styled by Paul Bracq and engineered under the safety-driven philosophy of Béla Barényi, it wore the now-legendary concave hardtop that earned the nickname Pagoda for its temple-like silhouette. Beyond looks, that roof shape added rollover strength and allowed the airy, slim‑pillar greenhouse that made the SL such a superb long-distance companion.
Under its long bonnet sat the M127 II 2.3‑litre straight‑six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, canted 20° to the right for a lower hood line. With 150 PS and a broad torque plateau, the 230 SL was quick in period but, more importantly, smooth and tractable. A 4‑speed manual was standard, a 4‑speed automatic broadened the appeal, and from 1966 a rare ZF 5‑speed manual became the connoisseur’s choice. Front disc brakes (with rear drums), a low‑pivot swing axle with compensator spring, and Barényi’s rigid safety cell gave the car poise and security few rivals could match.
Contemporary competitors were the Jaguar E‑Type, Porsche 356C (and soon 911), and Alfa Romeo’s 2600 Spider. Mercedes aimed the 230 SL at drivers who wanted continental pace without sacrificing comfort, refinement, or build quality. Period road tests praised its high‑speed stability, strong brakes and impeccable finish, while noting it was a GT rather than a razor‑edged sports car at the limit. The U.S. market embraced the formula—many cars left Sindelfingen with automatic transmission, power steering, Becker radios and (dealer‑installed) air‑conditioning, helping the SL become a transatlantic style icon.
Mercedes proved the 230 SL’s toughness almost immediately: in 1963 an officially backed 230 SL won the punishing Spa–Sofia–Liège rally, a feat that shocked purists and burnished the model’s reputation for durability. Running changes through production improved details and options, while most cars were delivered with both soft‑top and the removable Pagoda hardtop. Lightweight aluminium panels for the bonnet and boot lid kept weight in check, and the spare wheel’s upright mounting preserved usable boot space—clever packaging that owners still appreciate.
Pop culture quickly noticed. The W113’s clean lines and effortless glamour made it a natural on screen; a 230 SL features memorably in the 1967 film Two for the Road, reinforcing its chic, jet‑set image. By the time the 230 SL bowed out in 1967—19,831 built—it had reset expectations for an open Mercedes: fast enough, superbly safe, impeccably made and unfailingly elegant. Its successors (250 SL, 280 SL and beyond) followed the template it established, but enthusiasts still reserve a special affection for the original 230 SL Pagoda that started it all.
