From 350 e to 300 e: how the GLC plug‑in found its stride
The facelifted first‑generation Mercedes‑Benz GLC (internal code 253.2) arrived in 2019 with sharper lights, MBUX infotainment and, crucially for the electrified crowd, a thoroughly reworked plug‑in hybrid. Renamed from GLC 350 e to GLC 300 e 4MATIC, it adopted Mercedes’ third‑generation EQ Power hardware: a larger 13.5 kWh battery, a stronger 90 kW e‑motor integrated into the 9G‑TRONIC, and clever energy management tied to the navigation. Production ran through the end of the X253/C253 lifecycle, overlapping the handover to the new X254 GLC in 2022–2023.
Context matters. Europe’s tightening CO₂ targets and company‑car tax incentives created the perfect stage for a premium mid‑size SUV that could cruise silently in town yet blast down an autobahn. With a 2.0‑litre turbo petrol and e‑motor combining for 235 kW (320 PS) and up to 700 Nm, the 300 e felt every inch the “junior AMG” in day‑to‑day thrust, but with a serene, long‑legged refinement that reviewers praised. Period tests by the European press highlighted the smooth 9‑speed hybrid integration, hushed EV running and punchy mid‑range; they also noted the trade‑offs: a smaller boot due to the underfloor battery and brake feel that could vary as regeneration blended into the friction stoppers. Real‑world economy, as ever with PHEVs, depended squarely on diligent charging.
Rivals were formidable—BMW’s X3 xDrive30e, Audi’s Q5 TFSI e and Volvo’s XC60 Recharge all sharpened their game in the same window—but the GLC 300 e carved out a sweet spot. Route‑based energy management used map data to save charge for urban sections; a haptic “click” in the accelerator cued the EV/ICE threshold; pre‑entry climate control made early starts that bit more special. Later software updates in some markets added geofenced EV running for low‑emission zones. And unlike many electrified SUVs, the GLC PHEV could be specified to tow up to 2,000 kg—catnip for lifestyle buyers with boats or bikes.
Beyond the spec sheet, the 300 e became a quiet hero of the fleet world, especially in Germany, the UK and the Benelux, where its EQ Power blue accents and wallbox‑friendly 7.4 kW AC charging featured prominently in Mercedes’ ads. No blockbuster movie cameo was needed; the GLC 300 e’s everyday usability did the heavy lifting. By the time production wound down in 2023, it had helped normalise plug‑in tech for Mercedes SUV owners and paved the way for the broader EQ strategy and the second‑gen GLC’s more advanced hybrids—proof that sometimes the most significant revolutions happen one silent commute at a time.
