Launched between 1993 and 1996, the Peugeot 106 Rallye Series 1 distilled the hot-hatch idea to its purest form. Conceived as a spiritual successor to the 205 Rallye and to homologate a featherweight platform for Group N club rallying, it arrived with the rev-happy 1.3 TU2J2 good for about 100 PS, a close-ratio five-speed, and precious little else. No power steering, no ABS, no frills — just ~825 kg, white steel wheels and tricolour side scripts linking it to Peugeot Talbot Sport.
While the 106 range debuted in 1991, the Rallye variant targeted grassroots motorsport from 1993, feeding Peugeot’s one-make cups and national rally entries across Europe. Its short gearing and zingy top end made it a favourite on tight stages and hillclimbs, where momentum driving mattered more than outright power. Period road tests from UK and French magazines lauded its steering feel, quick turn-in and neutrality on the limit; it was repeatedly held up as a masterclass in how to make a modest supermini genuinely exciting.
Part of the charm was how single-minded it felt. The cabin wore tough cloth with bright seatbelts, the audio was basic, glass and sound deadening were kept thin, and options minimal. It came most commonly in Bianca White (though red and black appeared in some markets), always with those iconic white 14-inch steels. For purists, the 1.3’s willingness to spin past 7,000 rpm and the mechanical grip of its torsion-beam rear end defined the car’s character more than headline numbers ever could.
In competition, the 106 Rallye underpinned entry-level series and clubman rallying throughout the mid-’90s, seeding a generation of drivers who later graduated to faster machinery. On the road it earned cult status, frequently pitted in group tests against the Citroën AX GTi, Fiesta XR2i and later Saxo VTS. Advertising leaned into the motorsport link, showcasing the minimalist spec and PTS colours — a refreshing antidote to the gadget creep of the era.
Today the Series 1 Rallye is celebrated as one of Peugeot’s great driver’s cars: light, alert and wonderfully analogue. Survivors are sought after, especially unmodified examples, and the model’s influence lived on in the 1997–1998 106 Rallye Series 2 (1.6), but many enthusiasts still swear the original 1.3 is the sweetest, most authentic expression of the idea.
