Our Porsche 356 SC, first registered during the year 1965, currently shows 1,500 km since the engine rebuild. Originally delivered in Canada, it is now registered in France and was acquired by its current owner on June 25, 2024.
This example is presented in an elegant red finish, retaining its original color, paired with a black interior. The bodywork is in very good cosmetic condition and the hubcaps are new. The cabin is also in very good condition, with refurbished upholstery and a new headliner. The dashboard instrumentation functions correctly.
Powered by the famous 1.6-litre flat-four producing 95 hp, paired with a manual gearbox, this 356 SC represents the culmination of the 356 lineage before the arrival of the 911. The engine was completely rebuilt around 1,500 km ago and runs perfectly, delivering a mechanical experience faithful to the spirit of classic Porsches.
Maintenance has been carried out by classic car specialists. The car comes with a substantial file of invoices covering more than 40 years of history.

A Porsche 356 enthusiast, the current owner acquired this example following the engine rebuild in spring 2024 and has taken the greatest care of it ever since. A sound and well-maintained 356 SC, ready to return to the road and deliver the full authenticity of the earliest Porsches.
By the time the 356 SC arrived for model years 1964–1965, Porsche’s first production model had been honed for a decade and a half. The SC sat at the top of the 356 C range as the most potent pushrod version: a 1.6-litre flat-four tuned to 95 hp (SAE) paired with all‑round disc brakes. It was the last, and in many ways the best-evolved, roadgoing 356 before the torch passed to the all-new 911.
Born from the earlier Super 90, the SC’s Type 616/16 engine gained higher compression, a hotter cam, larger valves and dual Solex 40 PII-4 carburettors, plus a counterweighted crank for smoother high‑rpm running. The transformation was as much about control as speed: the C-series introduced ATE disc brakes at each corner—the first time a series-production Porsche wore discs all round—bringing shorter, more consistent stops and a reassuring pedal feel that period testers praised as world-class. Underneath sat the familiar torsion-bar chassis, sharpened with detail changes and often specified with Koni dampers, giving the 356 its characteristic blend of delicacy and tenacity on a twisting road.
In period, the SC found itself duelling with nimble European coupes—Alfa’s Giulia Sprint, Lotus’s Elan—and with the value-driven MGB, yet it carved out a different space: hand-finished quality, bank-vault robustness and uncanny composure on rough surfaces. Privateers continued to win in SCCA Production classes and club rallies with SCs, leveraging relentless reliability and braking advantage even as more powerful rivals emerged. The model’s timing was bittersweet. The sensational new 911 (and the 904 on track) stole headlines from 1964 onward, but the SC quietly cemented Porsche’s reputation for engineering depth; its pushrod engine architecture would live on—reworked—in the 912 that followed.
There are plenty of curiosities. The 356 C era coincided with Porsche buying its long-time body supplier Reutter; the seat business spun out as RECARO, a name that would become legendary in its own right. Cultural cachet? Few images are more indelible than Janis Joplin’s psychedelic-painted 1964 356C Cabriolet—proof that by the mid-60s the 356 was both a style icon and an enthusiast’s tool. Contemporary road tests lauded the SC’s superb stability and fade-free brakes, while noting a rorty engine note, modest cabin space and heavy parking‑lot steering. Today the SC is cherished as the swansong of the original Porsche idea: light, mechanical, unpretentious—and, when the road opens up, wonderfully alive.
