Our Caterham Seven 165, first registered on December 2, 2014, has covered 21,900 km.
Originally delivered in France, it is currently registered in France. This example changed ownership on May 17, 2017 and is presented in a black and yellow configuration paired with a black leather interior.

The Caterham Seven 160 arrived in late 2013 with first customer cars landing in 2014, a throwback to minimum-mass, maximum-fun motoring. It paired the classic narrow-body S3 Seven chassis with a tiny, turbocharged 660 cc Suzuki three-cylinder (R06A) to meet kei-car style efficiency and keep costs down. With around 80 bhp (82 hp) and 79 lb ft, a live rear axle and skinny 155-section tyres on 14-inch steel wheels, the 160 aimed to prove that delicacy and feel trump outright power.
It was offered as a kit or factory-built, and in most markets split into basic trim or an S Pack (windscreen, weather gear, heater, carpets, leather). The 160 name targeted the UK; in mainland Europe the near-identical 165 variant satisfied homologation requirements. Performance figures were modest on paper—0–60 mph in roughly 6.5–7.0 seconds and a 100 mph (160 km/h) top speed—but the real story was how it danced along B-roads at sensible speeds, turbo chirruping and chassis talking.
The reintroduction of a live rear axle (after years of De Dion Sevens) was both a cost and character decision, yielding low unsprung mass and playful breakaway on those skinny tyres. Reviews from Evo, Autocar and TopGear praised its adjustability and the novelty of extracting everything from a small-capacity turbo triple; several dubbed it the most fun you could legally have on the road. It also broadened Caterham’s audience with the lowest entry price in decades and running costs in motorcycle territory.
Special editions amplified the formula. The 2016 Seven 160 Sprint, revealed at Goodwood Revival, wrapped the 160’s mechanicals in unapologetic 1960s nostalgia—heritage paints, chrome hubcaps, Brooklands aeroscreens and a wood-rim wheel—selling out rapidly (built in very limited numbers). In 2017 the Seven SuperSprint went further with period race cues and a hotter tune of the same 660 cc engine (circa 95 bhp), and it famously sold out within hours, underlining how much appetite existed for light, slow-car-fast thrills.
Competition came less from other kit cars and more from purist roadsters like the Mazda MX-5 and quirky lightweights such as the Morgan 3 Wheeler or Westfield’s entry models. Yet the Caterham’s recipe—half a tonne, manual steering, unfiltered controls—remained singular. Emissions changes and supply realities ultimately ended 160/165 production by 2017, after which the Ford Sigma-powered 270 reclaimed entry-level duty. Still, the 160’s legacy endures: it reminded the market that engagement isn’t about numbers, and cemented Caterham’s image as the world’s master of lightweight fun.
Fun facts: the 160’s skinny tyres were deliberate to keep limits approachable; many owners say resisting the urge to upsize preserves its magic. Period economy figures were near 57 mpg (UK), and many kits were owner-assembled in a few weekends—adding to the folk-hero charm.
