When Porsche refreshed the 911 line as the 997 in 2004, purists cheered the return to classic round headlamps and a far better-finished cabin. The 997.1 Carrera 4S (2006–2008) landed as the sweet-spot for many buyers: the charismatic 3.8-litre flat-six of the Carrera S married to all-wheel drive and the purposeful wide body, 44 mm broader at the rear and linked by a retro-cool red reflector strip. It looked a half-step from a Turbo, but kept the naturally aspirated zing and everyday civility that made the 911 such an evergreen hit.
Under the decklid sat Porsche’s M97/01, a 3824 cc, 24-valve flat-six with VarioCam Plus, rated at 355 PS and 400 Nm. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) was standard on S models, and the C4S added a viscous-coupling AWD system that sent torque forward as needed without muting that rear-engined feel. Buyers chose between a crisp 6-speed manual and the 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic—the last torque-converter auto offered in a Carrera before PDK arrived with the 997.2. Factory upgrades could transform the character: Sport Chrono, sport exhaust (PSE), a -20 mm sport chassis, PCCB ceramics, a mechanical LSD, and the coveted X51 Powerkit lifting output to ~381 PS with revised intake, exhaust and oiling.
Period testers praised the C4S for hydraulic steering feel and wet-road composure. 0–100 km/h around the five-second mark and a near-290 km/h top end put it nose-to-nose with the era’s best. Its rivals were a fascinating mix: Aston Martin V8 Vantage (style and soundtrack), BMW M6 (brutal V10 pace), and, from 2007, the mid-engined Audi R8—yet few matched the Porsche’s bandwidth as a car you could thrash on Sunday and commute in on Monday. Reviews often dinged the price with options and the Tiptronic’s age versus newer dual-clutches, but the verdict was clear: this was the 911 refined and re-energised.
As a cultural object, the 997 generation featured regularly on TV and in games—Top Gear lauded the return to form, and the 997 Carrera S/4S became a staple in Need for Speed titles—cementing the car’s ubiquity for a new audience. A fun detail: that continuous rear reflector on Carrera 4/4S models nodded to classic G-series 911s. The 997.1 C4S also stands at a crossroads in Porsche lore—the final pre-DFI Carrera engine and the last with Tiptronic—bridging analogue tactility with modern comfort. Today it’s celebrated as an all-seasons 911 with the stance and grip enthusiasts love, and a spec list that lets you tailor it from grand tourer to near-GT car.
