Porsche 911 (991.1) Carrera 4 GTS – context and story
By late 2014, Porsche had perfected its modern 911 “GTS recipe”: take the already brilliant Carrera S, add the factory Powerkit, bundle the key chassis and aero bits enthusiasts usually option, and price it keenly. The 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS brought that formula to the wide-body, all-wheel-drive coupe and cabriolet, offered through 2016 and rated at 430 PS from the naturally aspirated 3.8 flat-six. It landed squarely between the everyday Carreras and the hard-edged GT3, becoming for many the 911 range’s sweet spot.
The GTS name itself is a nod to heritage: Porsche’s 904 Carrera GTS of the 1960s, and later the 928 GTS, set the tone for a driver-focused specification without the full track compromise. On the 991.1 C4 GTS that meant the X51 Powerkit, PASM, Sport Chrono with dynamic engine mounts, PTV with an LSD, a sports exhaust and those distinctive 20-inch Turbo S centre-lock wheels—all standard. Visually, you got the wide hips of the AWD shell, black exterior accents, a SportDesign front apron and a cabin dressed with Alcantara and GTS logos.
Launched into a fiercely competitive era—think Audi R8 V8/V10, Jaguar F-Type R (including the new-for-2015 AWD), Mercedes-AMG GT S and the always-benchmark Nissan GT-R—the C4 GTS played a different card: nuanced steering feel, superb traction, and real-world pace wrapped in everyday usability. Period road tests consistently praised its bandwidth: compliant enough for commuting, yet with a depth of chassis talent that made Alpine passes and track days equally rewarding. Many reviewers called it the best all-round 911 of its time.
There were curiosities and highlights. It was one of the last naturally aspirated 911 GTS models; its successor, the 991.2 GTS, moved to the 3.0 twin-turbo. Buyers could still choose a seven-speed manual (rarer on AWD cars), while PDK with Launch Control delivered repeatable sub-4.0 s 0–100 km/h launches. The optional Aerokit Cup added a more aggressive fixed rear wing on a handful of cars. Porsche’s own marketing often showcased GTS cars in Carmine Red or Agate Grey with black detailing—an aesthetic now strongly associated with the badge.
Commercially, the GTS trim proved important: it lifted average transaction values and kept traditionalists engaged just before the brand’s downsized-turbo era arrived. Today, the 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS holds strong enthusiast appeal as the all-weather, wide-body, centre-lock, naturally aspirated crescendo of the early 991 generation.
