Our Rolls-Royce 20/25, put into circulation in January 1936, was initially delivered in the United States before arriving in England at a Rolls Royce and Bentley specialist, where its first and only French owner acquired it in early 2009. Since then he has preserved it with the greatest care.
This model features an elegant two-tone English Green and Black color, with a refined interior: black upholstery at the front and cream at the back. A true collector's item, this Rolls-Royce is distinguished by its prestigious history, having belonged to a member of the Kennedy family and having been exhibited at exceptional events.
It is equipped with an in-line 6-cylinder engine combined with a 4-speed manual gearbox. An overdrive has been added, offering two additional ratios on 3rd and 4th speed for better driving pleasure. With 96,500 miles on the clock, this prestigious car starts both electrically and with a crank.
The maintenance was exclusively entrusted to specialists, with a file of invoices, detailed notes and also the original car registration documents of the previous owners. A complete overhaul was carried out on March 8, 2025, at 96,460 miles, including an oil change. The consumables are in good condition and no costs are to be expected. Only a few aesthetic flaws should be noted: a slight dent on the front fenders and a paint defect on the left rear fender.

Rolls-Royce 20/25 Saloon (1929–1936)
Launched at the end of 1929 as the successor to the 20 hp, the 20/25 was the car that carried Rolls‑Royce through the toughest years of the Great Depression. It was conceived as the “owner‑driver” Rolls‑Royce: smaller and more manageable than a Phantom, yet imbued with the same whisper‑quiet manners, meticulous engineering and the brand’s relentless pursuit of refinement. Beneath coachwork by the likes of Park Ward, Hooper, H.J. Mulliner, Barker, Thrupp & Maberly or Gurney Nutting, the separate chassis and OHV straight‑six delivered effortless torque and velvet smoothness – exactly what well‑heeled clients expected.
The 20/25’s designation reflects its lineage and tax‑horsepower class rather than a quoted power figure; Rolls‑Royce famously declined to publish bhp. Contemporary estimates put it around the 60 bhp mark, but the experience mattered more than numbers. Period road tests in The Motor and The Autocar praised its flexibility – the ability to pull from walking pace in top gear – and its superb servo‑assisted brakes. From 1932 the car gained synchromesh on third and top, making it easier to glide through the gears. During its run, the model received a steady stream of refinements: higher‑compression cylinder heads and revised carburation for better performance, the adoption (in the early 1930s) of Luvax hydraulic dampers with driver‑adjustable Ride Control, Bijur centralised chassis lubrication and stronger frame cross‑members to cope with ever‑heavier coachwork.
Competition in period came from Daimler and Alvis at home, and later from the “Derby” Bentley 3½‑litre within Rolls‑Royce’s own stable after the Bentley acquisition in 1931. Even so, the 20/25 carved a loyal following among the country‑house set and professional classes who wanted to drive themselves during the week and be chauffeured at weekends. Saloons were by far the most common bodies, prized for their quiet cabins, deep wool upholstery and the sort of woodwork that made rivals look austere.
Fun footnotes abound. Many 20/25s were specified right‑hand drive even for export, a nod to tradition. A fair number were re‑bodied later in life – into elegant dropheads, shooting brakes or lighter tourers – which only underlines the versatility of the chassis. With around 3,827 built, survival rates are high thanks to robust engineering and an enthusiastic spares network. The 20/25 also enjoys an active life on screen: its quintessential 1930s silhouette makes it a frequent extra in period films and TV dramas, and it remains a favourite at events like Goodwood Revival.
By 1936, increasingly opulent coachwork demanded more power, and the 20/25 handed the baton to the 25/30 with a larger 4.25‑litre engine. Yet the 20/25’s legacy is secure: it broadened Rolls‑Royce’s appeal without diluting its mystique, proving that “the best car in the world” could also be the most useable.
