The Corvette story begins under Motorama spotlights in 1953: a daring, fiberglass-bodied roadster sketched under Harley Earl’s watch that promised American glamour but, at first, delivered more sizzle than steak. Early cars had a Blue Flame straight-six and a Powerglide two-speed, side curtains instead of proper windows, and build quality that left road testers cool. Sales stalled, and the Ford Thunderbird loomed as a polished, V8-powered threat.

Enter Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Belgian-born engineer who would become the Corvette’s guardian angel. He pushed for a small-block V8 in 1955 and for true performance credibility. The real turning point came in 1956: a comprehensive restyle with the iconic scalloped coves, proper roll-up windows, exterior door handles, a stiffer chassis and, crucially, the new 265-cu-in V8. In base tune with a single four‑barrel, it made 210 hp—our focus here—and finally gave America’s sports car the muscle to match its style. Optional dual-quads nudged output higher, and Duntov’s hot-cam know-how showed results at Daytona, where Corvette set speed records and grabbed headlines.

Competition sharpened the breed. SCCA and Sebring outings—including the factory-influenced SR-2 racers—proved that an American fiberglass roadster could trade punches with Jaguars and Ferraris. In 1957 the little Chevy V8 grew to 283 cu in, and with Rochester fuel injection it famously achieved “one horsepower per cubic inch.” A close-ratio 4‑speed and Positraction followed, and by 1958 the Corvette wore quad headlamps and more chrome to suit the times. Period testers who once scolded the car for flabby handling and so-so brakes now praised its punch and newfound composure, even if the drum brakes still asked for respect on mountain descents.

By 1960 a Corvette had taken a class win at Le Mans, cementing racing legitimacy. The 1961 tail previewed the Sting Ray with its tidy “ducktail,” while the 1962 finale brought the 327 V8 with up to 360 hp and a cleaner, toothless grille. Pop culture embraced it: the TV series Route 66 rolled across America in Corvettes, and early-’60s astronauts—instant national heroes—were often seen in America’s sports car, further burnishing the myth.

What the 210 hp C1 represents is the moment the Corvette grew into its promise. It didn’t have fuel injection or discs, but it had the right sound, the right stance, and—at last—the performance to make the T‑Bird and Europe’s best take note. From there, the legend only gathered speed.
