The Maserati Ghibli III 350 hp sits at the heart of Maserati’s modern-era expansion. Reviving a storied badge first worn by the 1967 Giugiaro-penned V8 GT and later by the compact, twin‑turbo Ghibli II of the 1990s, the third‑generation Ghibli (type M157) arrived in 2013 to take Maserati into the executive-saloon battlefield. The 350 hp tune of the Ferrari-built, Maserati-designed 3.0‑litre twin‑turbo V6 became widely offered from 2017, coinciding with the car’s mid-life update.
Maserati aimed this car squarely at the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes‑Benz E‑Class, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF, but with a uniquely Italian mix of drama and long‑legged GT manners. Built at the AGAP plant in Grugliasco near Turin, the Ghibli helped propel Maserati to record global volumes between 2014 and 2017. In several markets, the 350 hp variant neatly bridged the entry petrol (330 hp in some regions) and the hotter S versions, offering the full Maserati soundtrack and performance without stepping into the range‑topper’s territory.
The 2017 facelift was more than a nip‑and‑tuck. New GranLusso and GranSport trims arrived, aerodynamics were cleaned up (helping reduce drag), and crucially the hydraulic steering made way for electric assistance, unlocking a modern ADAS suite (Highway Assist, Lane Keeping, adaptive cruise with stop‑and‑go). Full‑LED matrix headlamps and the predictive Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) stability system sharpened the car’s long‑distance poise. Inside, Maserati’s 8.4‑inch MTC+ infotainment with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (first added in 2016) felt more at home; by MY21 the Ghibli gained a faster 10.1‑inch system and connected services, keeping the package current. The range later broadened with the Hybrid and the wild V8 Trofeo, but the 350 remained the purist’s sweet spot for rear‑drive balance and tone.
Period reviews captured the car’s character well: critics praised its distinctive Pininfarina‑esque stance, soulful V6 note with active exhaust bypass valves, and relaxed, grand‑touring gait. They also noted areas where the Germans still led—some switchgear origins and early infotainment ergonomics—issues Maserati progressively addressed. A delightful curiosity was the optional Ermenegildo Zegna silk interior inserts, a flourish no rival could match. And in terms of cultural footprint, few launches were bolder than Maserati’s 2014 Super Bowl spot “Strike”, which introduced the Ghibli to America with a goosebump‑raising manifesto and put the nameplate firmly back on the map.
Against a sea of ruthlessly efficient rivals, the Ghibli 350 hp carved its space by leaning into heritage, feel and theatre. It may not chase tenths on a lap time, but it makes the everyday commute and the motorway sprint feel special—very much the Maserati way.
