Our Porsche 356 SC, first registered during the year 1965, currently shows 1,500 km since the engine rebuild. Originally delivered in Canada, it is now registered in France and was acquired by its current owner on June 25, 2024.
This example is presented in an elegant red finish, retaining its original color, paired with a black interior. The bodywork is in very good cosmetic condition and the hubcaps are new. The cabin is also in very good condition, with refurbished upholstery and a new headliner. The dashboard instrumentation functions correctly.
Powered by the famous 1.6-litre flat-four producing 95 hp, paired with a manual gearbox, this 356 SC represents the culmination of the 356 lineage before the arrival of the 911. The engine was completely rebuilt around 1,500 km ago and runs perfectly, delivering a mechanical experience faithful to the spirit of classic Porsches.
Maintenance has been carried out by classic car specialists. The car comes with a substantial file of invoices covering more than 40 years of history.

Porsche 356 SC (95 hp), 1964–1965
Arriving as the ultimate pushrod evolution of Porsche’s first production car, the 356 SC crowned the 1964–1965 “C” series with genuine everyday usability and a welcome shot of pace. While the 356 C introduced four-wheel ATE disc brakes and tidied styling, the SC added the most potent regular-production 1.6-litre flat-four yet: higher compression, a hotter cam and twin Solex 40 PII-4 carburettors for a quoted 95 SAE hp. In period road tests the SC combined the 356’s trademark light-on-its-feet feel with newfound braking authority and high-speed composure.
Compared with the outgoing Super 90 and the 75 hp 356 C, the SC’s upgrades were meaningful where it counts: stronger mid-range, crisper throttle response, and braking that felt contemporary next to rivals. Under the skin were incremental refinements that summed to a very sorted whole—full-flow oil filtration, detail suspension tuning (torsion bars and anti-roll bar), and the robust Type 741 four-speed transaxle with well-spaced ratios. Optional KONI dampers and a ZF limited-slip differential let keen drivers sharpen the car further.
The timing was poignant. Externally, the 356 SC was jousting with Alfa’s Giulia Sprint, Lotus’s Elan and the ever-faster British roadsters; internally, it had to coexist with a new in-house rival—the six-cylinder 911, launched in late 1964. Rather than fading, the SC helped Porsche bridge eras: its engine architecture would directly inform the soon-to-arrive 912, which inherited a detuned derivative of the SC powerplant. For many enthusiasts the SC is the sweet spot—disc-brake confidence, the most eager pushrod engine, and classic 356 charm.
On rally stages and in club racing the 356 SC proved a dependable class contender, echoing the 356’s long résumé of class wins from Le Mans to the Targa Florio. Period testers praised its consistency: secure braking, precise (if low-geared) steering and an honesty at the limit that rewarded smooth hands. Criticisms tended to be price, a still-tail-happy balance if provoked, and ergonomics dating back to the early fifties.
Pop culture gave the 356 C/SC real stardust. The most famous might be Janis Joplin’s 1964 356 C Cabriolet, later auctioned for well over a million dollars thanks to its psychedelic paintwork—proof that even the final-year cars were icons in their own right. And while film and TV often spotlight earlier Speedsters, the SC’s two-year run and status as the last and best-developed 356 have made it a blue-chip classic. If you want the essence of the original Porsche with the most useful period upgrades, the 356 SC is it.
