When Porsche launched the mid‑engined Cayman S in late 2005 for the 2006 model year, it landed like a perfectly judged apex strike. Born from the 987 Boxster platform but stiffened with a fixed roof and tuned as a driver’s coupe, the 987.1 Cayman S slotted neatly between the Boxster S and 911 Carrera—by intent. Its 3.4‑litre M97 flat‑six made 295 hp, just enough to thrill without treading on 911 toes, and its balance became the talking point of the era.
Period testers at Evo, Autocar and others gushed about the car’s steering clarity, iron‑fist body control and the way it invited you to use every millimetre of the throttle. Car and Driver repeatedly placed the Boxster/Cayman pair on its 10Best lists. Jeremy Clarkson famously suggested Porsche had hobbled the Cayman to protect the 911—yet still called it one of the most satisfying cars to drive. On a good road, few disagreed.
Competition arrived from many directions: BMW’s Z4 M Coupé (raw and rabid), Nissan’s 350Z (punchy value), the quattro‑gripped Audi TT 3.2, and track toys like the Lotus Exige. The Cayman S countered with composure and precision. It was also unexpectedly practical: with luggage bays both fore and aft, it swallowed around 410 litres—hot‑hatch practicality with mid‑engine poise.
Across 2006–2008 the fundamentals stayed constant, but Porsche sprinkled in desirable options—PASM adaptive dampers, Sport Chrono, the sonorous Porsche Sport Exhaust, and even PCCB ceramic brakes. Two special runs spiced up the final pre‑facelift year: the stealthy Cayman S Design Edition 1 (2008, around 777 units) in gloss black with grey stripes, Alcantara touches and a rich standard kit; and the Cayman S Sport (2008/09), which nudged output to about 303 PS (c. 299 hp SAE) with a freer‑breathing setup, made PASM/PSE/Sport Chrono standard and wore vivid hues borrowed from Porsche’s racing palette.
Culturally, the Cayman S seeped into the zeitgeist: it featured in multiple Need for Speed titles of the era and was a frequent guest on TV road tests and magazine covers—often with lap‑times embarrassingly close to pricier machinery. Owners discovered it was an ideal club‑racing seed, thriving in one‑make and time‑attack series thanks to stout brakes and thermal resilience. Not every story was rosy; early M97 engines can face known maladies (RMS weeps, occasional bore‑scoring), though far fewer than the internet folklore suggests when cars are maintained correctly.
For Porsche, the 987.1 Cayman S proved a strategic masterstroke. It broadened the brand’s reach without diluting it, reminded the world that balance can trump brute force, and paved the way for even sharper derivatives. If the 911 was the legend, the Cayman S was the quiet genius—less headline, more perfect line.
