Toyota Celica 1600 ST (1971–1977) arrived as Toyota’s accessible sports coupé for the world, spinning the brand’s reliable, mass‑market image into something far more aspirational. Launched in Japan in late 1970 and exported from 1971, the first‑gen Celica (A20/A30 series; 1600 models coded TA22/TA23) borrowed the long‑bonnet/short‑deck proportions of American pony cars and wrapped them in tidy, compact dimensions. The ST was the sweet‑spot trim for many markets: stylish and well‑equipped without the insurance‑unfriendly GT’s twin‑cam bite.
Under the bonnet, the 1.6‑litre 2T inline‑four was a tough, chain‑driven OHV unit fed by a twin‑barrel carb. In European tune it produced roughly 93 hp (DIN), enough for real‑world pace thanks to a light shell and slick Toyota gearbox. MacPherson struts up front and a four‑link live axle on coils at the rear gave the Celica a friendly, predictable balance that period testers praised, often noting its refinement and build quality stood out among rivals.
Those rivals were serious: Ford Capri in Europe, Opel Manta A, Mazda’s rotary coupes and, in spirit, Datsun’s 240Z. Toyota priced and equipped the ST cleverly—tachometer, full instrumentation and decent seats in many markets—creating a car that looked exotic but was easy to own. A mid‑cycle update around 1974 (the A30 facelift) brought a new grille and lamps, interior tweaks and, depending on region, a 5‑speed option and safety/emissions changes. In the U.S., big bumpers dulled the looks; in Europe and Japan, the Celica kept its crisp lines. The range broadened with the dramatic Liftback, while the 1600 ST remained the mainstream coupe.
Impact? Huge. The Celica cemented Toyota’s reputation for fun cars that started every morning. It also set the stage for Toyota Team Europe: while the early 1600s mainly collected class results, the model’s popularity and durability formed the bedrock for later Celica rally glory. In Japan the first‑gen earned the affectionate nickname “Daruma Celica” (like the roly‑poly doll), a nod to its rounded proportions.
Curios and culture: The first‑gen Celica shows up regularly in classic‑JDM circles and has been featured in popular racing video games (including iterations of Gran Turismo), which helped a new generation discover the shape. Period road tests in Autocar and other European magazines praised the gearbox and integrity of the body, while often wishing for the GT’s extra shove. Enthusiasts today love the ST for its usability—and that crisp, mechanical feel that’s all but vanished. When production wound down in 1977 and the A40/A50 second generation took over, the template was set: Celica would be Toyota’s sports‑coupé spearhead for decades.
