For the past 20 years, dual-clutch transmissions have been sprouting up like daffodils in spring. DCT, DKG, DSG… The idea is to combine the smoothness of a traditional automatic with the efficiency of a manual and the lightning-fast shifts of an F1-style automated gearbox.
The concept is relatively simple: within a single housing, two gearboxes operate independently, each with its own clutch—one handling odd-numbered gears, the other even-numbered gears. With pre-engaged gears and no torque interruption, shifts occur seamlessly by simply switching between the engaged and disengaged clutches.
