Range Rover Sport L494 P400e (404 PS), 2018–2022
The plug‑in hybrid P400e arrived as part of the 2018 model‑year facelift, marking the first time the Range Rover Sport line plugged into the mains. Land Rover combined its aluminium L494 platform and air‑suspended, go‑anywhere hardware with a 2.0‑litre Ingenium turbo petrol and an 85 kW e‑motor, the pair good for a headline 404 PS and 640 Nm. It landed right when Europe’s emissions rules tightened and London’s congestion and ULEZ schemes pushed premium SUVs to electrify.
Under the skin Land Rover packaged a 13.1 kWh lithium‑ion battery under the boot floor, kept the twin‑speed transfer case optional, and integrated the motor within the ZF 8‑speed, so the P400e could still crawl a rocky trail in EV mode. Marketing proved that point spectacularly in 2018’s Dragon Challenge: racing driver Ho‑Pin Tung drove a P400e up China’s Tianmen Mountain Road and then climbed the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate on a 45‑degree staircase. For an urban counterpoint, the charge port hid neatly behind the green oval in the grille—a favourite talking point at kerbside.
At launch its rivals were the BMW X5 xDrive40e, Volvo XC90 T8, Mercedes GLE 500e and Porsche Cayenne S E‑Hybrid. Reviewers praised the Range Rover’s serene EV glide in town, plush ride and breadth of off‑road talent few PHEVs could touch. Criticism focussed on the four‑cylinder’s gruffness when worked hard, brake‑blending feel, and a real‑world fuel economy that depended heavily on charging discipline. As the cycle moved on, BMW’s six‑cylinder xDrive45e (from 2019) arrived with a much larger battery and smoother character, shifting the goalposts for electric range and refinement—yet the Sport remained the driver’s PHEV choice for anyone who needed to tow or ford a river.
Throughout 2018–2022 the P400e benefited from rolling updates: the facelift brought the dual‑screen Touch Pro Duo cabin, slimmer Matrix/Pixel LED lamps and driver‑assist upgrades; later model years added Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, broader camera functions including 3D Surround and Wade Sensing refinements, and a run of special editions (HSE Silver, Dynamic Black, Westminster, and the 2022 Edition). The battery capacity stayed at 13.1 kWh, but calibration and WLTP ratings evolved with software and tyre specifications.
On screen the L494 Sport family enjoyed frequent cameos—most famously the SVR in the Bond film Spectre—which bled desirability into the quieter P400e. In the real world, it became a darling of London postcodes thanks to its tax and charge benefits, while keeping the Range Rover Sport’s image as the stylish, athletic member of the Range Rover clan. It bowed out in 2022 as the new L461 generation arrived with a much larger‑battery P440e, but the P400e’s mission was complete: it proved a plug could coexist with low‑range gearing and an 850 mm wading depth, without dimming the Sport’s badge.
